Proteins are made up of molecules. Sometimes, when proteins 'go wrong" they fold up on themselves, and change properties. Folded proteins are thought to be involved in, or cause some diseases, like cancer, brain diseases, and who knows what else.

For example, prions are folded proteins from brains and nerves in some mammals. They survive cooking, and if brains or nerve tissue from affected cows or deer or some other animals are eaten, the prions can make their way into the brain and nervous system of the eater, and can cause Mad Cow disease or Creutzfeld-Jacob Syndrome.

Researching real proteins, making them fold, takes time. Using a program to model the folding, allows researchers to go through many iterations of folding in a fraction of the time. On one computer, it takes a lot of computing power and time to study even one protein. By spreading it out to thousands of computers, they are able to accomplish in weeks or months what would otherwise take many years. The folding project is doing just that. Running in the backgkround on many thousands of computers, the folding project has returned results in a few years that would have taken decades to produce one at a time on a single computer.

so what you are saying is that these computers kinda model the folding of the proteins almost?

Thumbs up

The DogForum.org folding team is now ranked at 2.1%...

I may have found a way to start folding again. We'll see if it works.

That's great, my computers are pretty slow but I fold on two of them.
