Default Talk to your dog

I don't think I know anyone who doesn't talk to their dog :-)

Rascal even knows some words too Like 'apple time', 'Not yet' referring when it is getting close to feeding time and we are going into the 'food room' (kitchen) and 'outside?' That one is obvious. She won't bark to be let out but will sit by the back door and just stare at us.

I have long known that dogs that are kept insdie, or are house dogs, and around people talking (and talking to them) understand far more words than dogs outside. My last Irish Setter knew so many words we started spelling words. He knew that both ride and car were associated with him getting to go for a ride. It reached the point if Jerry was going to wash the car he would spell C-A-R. Same with walk, If one of us was going to walk down to the mail box, we spelled W-A-L-K, He knew food, eat, and dish all meant eating time.

Also, the way we said the word EARS meant different things to him. Just the single word said one way he would come running to get his ears rubbed. Said in a different tone, he headed out of sight becaue knew it was ear cleaning time. That dog knew knew more words than any other dog I have known before or since.
