Default "Same ole' Song and Dance My Friend" (Pulling)

I have gone through this before and we have made much progress. However, there are days when he just explodes with excitement. This morning I walked my neighbor's dog as well and it was a pulling match between the two. My dog wanted to play, her dog wanted to pull and walk ahead of me as her owner always allows. They both start to sniff in different directions and I'm split in two! How do I stop that? I walk them both close to my side but the are pulling a good part of the time. My shoulders ache. Once we get in to a walking mode they are much better. My dog by himself is much better.

There are days when I spend our walk stopping, redirecting and stopping again.
A 30-min walk takes an hour.

Tomorrow I'm going to make him sit and tie his lease around her fence while I get her dog hooked up. Same when I get back. Any suggestions?

Thx, R and B the K9

All I know to do is train, train, train with your own dog. I have no suggestions for your neighbors' dog unless you walk him/her every day.
Maybe if you get them together a little before the walk they can play together for a bit then go for your walk?

Today I took more control of the situation. I made my dog wait outside the gate while we got the other dog ready.

I took them both with less mayhem and walked down the driveway. There were a few times when they both pulled in different directions but it wasn't as bad as yesterday. I think I need to keep stopping when they pull..... sigh. I'll keep working on it and remind myself I'm in control of the walk not them. Thx -

Any chance of making sure they get some exercise in the back yard before you take them for their walk? I think it sounds like an uphill battle if your neighbor allows her dog to pull. Glad to hear today went better.

You were right about having them run around before their walk. However this is Southern Arizona in the summertime. It’s 100° at 5:34 PM cooler than yesterday LOL

Mornings I’m already getting up at 05:00. I would need to get up earlier to get them together right away. Even though I know a good dog is a tired dog, I guess I’m not willing to get up earlier.

I’m dog sitting another neighbors dog this evening. She’s extremely high energy and pulls on the leash to the point where she’s gagging. Halfway through the walk she finally slows down. I’m hoping the temperature will drop a bit so I can let them both in the yard for a while. I normally walk my dog around 7pm or so. Sometimes the temperature doesn’t drop a bit - sometimes it does.

Thanks you are right about a tired dog.

Ugh.. I do feel for you. I am not a big summer person and our current heat wave almost has me wistfully missing snow in the yard! Might you neighbor be willing to purchase one of the no pull harnesses that have the D-ring on both the top closure of the harness as well as on the piece that goes across the chest? There are several makers of this type. I’ve used this with the Halti training lead leash. This leash is double ended so you hook it to both the D rings and it has been very effective with pulling and lunging. I also love the Halti training leash because it is so easy on the hands and adjust for several lengths and configurations which is great.

Well, I walked them last eve around 7pm. It was still 100* however, the sun was slowing setting behind the mountains. We were able to stick to the shady side of the street. It's a teeny bit cooler if we wait until dark but I need to watch out for critters.

She pulled for half a block and then settled down. I think the heat kicked her little butt. We only walked a block radius. They were funny when we got to the door. They couldn't get in the house fast enough.

I have a harness with a ring in the front AND on the back. However, it was for my 40 lb boy. Might be too big for her but I will check.

Thanks again, R and B the K9

I forgot an important thing. The 'Wild Child' is already on a harness. It clips in the back. She still pulls and gags as it tightens around her chest while she's flailing about. I don't know if a front clip would help although I will still research. Thx, R

Hmmm, I think I have a Halti in the house too. The harness looked a bit big. R
