Default General question - Ignoring basic command

Hello Everyone,

My dog knows basic commands however, it appears he may have selective hearing. I can say, 'Buddy come' and he will either come running or I will walk around the house looking for him to find he is curled up in his crate. I get 'the look' as if to say 'what did you want? I'm relaxing.'

Why?

Thanks,
Robin and Buddy the Bambino

Does he feel it is worth his while to give up what he is doing to come when you call? For the most part, my dogs will come when I call them but if they have found something they find fascinating or irresistible to sniff or watch in when they are out, it's more like "Yeah, yeah, hang on a minute". I went back to basics with giving them treats when they come as I did when I was first training them, but I uppped the value of the treats (milkbones or carrots they know. chicken is a "I'm coming right now" treat) and that got great response. If they need periodic refreshers I will do the same thing... and hope I never get to the "sirloin steak"!

We have a Great Pyrenees and they are known for not paying attention. In fact, it is a joke that their ears are "non functioning listening devices". However, Sir Moose comes when called...unless he has a possum in the wood pile or on the fence. Pyrs were bred to be left along guarding sheep, goats, etc, etc and they think and make decisions on their own. And as with people, if they don't want to pay attention, they don't. But we are so happy tht Sir Moose listens so well.

I Think that's a excellent idea of JGLI sometimes refreshing your dogs memory is important just because they are much older shouldn't mean relaxing the house rules I have found that out my self ATB
