Default Walking dogs

My leg is getting better by the day. Today I took Bonnie and my sister took her Golden and we walked around the lake. It is an off lead area but we kept both on lead as they need to learn some manners.

Most of the people are pretty good about taking hold of their dogs but of course, the first one we met coming towards us was someone with a Golden that came charging towards us. It was a good thing Bonnie was on leash as she hit the end of it trying to run away from the dog coming at her. They never even called the dog back and it growled at the Golden my sister had sitting beside her.

Some other people came along with a couple of little Yorkies which of course, Bonnie wanted to go meet but we made them both sit and the two dogs just walked past. The next big one we saw coming quite a ways ahead so moved off the trail so Bonnie did not get scared of it. Ever since that Shepherd went after her she is really leery of big dogs running at her and I don't blame her so just make her sit and lots of treats.

The very last dog, a big Lab cross, we met, she saw us coming, put him on leash and had him sit beside her. Bonnie was a little scared at first but I stopped a little way from her and made her sit and talked to her for a few minutes and gave her some treats, then we walked on.

Was good for the first time walking on leash and meeting so many different dogs off leash. She has been fine in the arena with lots of big dogs but they are on leash too and we never let them play with each other as they are there to learn to ignore other dogs, not play.

I'll bet it felt great to be able to take them for such a nice walk, I'm jealous :-) we don't have any parks around here that let you walk your dog on or off leash, I'm jealous about that too!

Sounds like a very successful walk with them both. I'm sure with walking this way it will help greatly in building Bonnie's confidence back up.

Leo is still barky at some new dogs we walk towards. Most times once he actually meets them he is just fine. I do the same with him. When he starts barking I get him t sit until he stops or the other dog reaches us. It's taking a while but he is getting better.

I was glad I had Bonnie and not Kris as even though I have worked on her for years, Kris is still reactive to other dogs if she is on leash. When she is off leash, she is usually fine but if another dog growled at her, I am not sure what she would do. With her it is safer to walk her on the trails in town at the back of the fairgrounds as you can walk there and there are not any other dogs. There are quite a few people that walk there dogs there but we are all polite and if we see someone else walking we either come back later or wait till they are finished so have never had any problems there. She can be off leash there so gets a good run.
