Default Dogs at our local Humane Society

Hey everyone. I couldn't help but tell the story of some of the wonderful dogs that have come and gone through the Union County Humane Society in Ohio. I started volunteering there not that long ago and it is such a wonderful experience. Every dog that comes in has a story, it's own personality, and the longing to be loved, played with, and given another chance. Each one is special.

Currently we have somewhere around 35 dogs, some of which are still going through the quarantine process (treated for fleas or worms, vaccinated, fixed if needed, treated for any illness or injury, ect). I have to say, while I don't want to pick favorites, I can't help but like the boxer mix that recently came in. His name is Morton, and he is such a silly-boy with his games of "catch-me-if-you-can" and a face that makes him look like he is constantly laughing for joy. Then there is Marx, always eager for a treat and a kind word, and Karmin, who adores to run for all she is worth.

Just this month a number of dogs have been adopted! This includes the young beagle mix, Betty; Buster the lab mix; Matrix the pit-bull (he got to go to a home with his new sweet-heart, a pit-mix); Nadia the pit-bull; Uno the boxer mix puppy; Comet the 6-month-old Border collie mix; Josie the shy lab-mix; Sally the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever mix puppy; Sabreena the Boston Terrier mix; Barley the sweet chow-mix girl; Libby the little Shih Tzu mix; and of course we can't forget big-old Zorro, the lab-mix, who got adopted after a long time of waiting. I am so happy for him (and all of them).

I'll try to post some pictures of them soon.

Thanks so much! : )

Even if you can't volunteer, Techie, I bet you make up for it by how wonderful an owner you are to your dog. : )
It is always enough to give love to an animal, it doesn't matter how many, when or how.

Pictures of Hancock, the sweet and enthusiastic shepherd mix (possibly with hound?) He just adores being around people.

Niko the pug mix, hanging out with the already adopted, Fender. Niko is sweet, slightly demanding when he feels ignored, and totally adorable. Fender was adopted by a staff member and is a good friend for other dogs around his size.

And Durango the boxer mix saying hello to one of the newest dogs, a Pyrenees mix named Fuzz Bucket. Durango may be older, but he is energetic, loving, playful and healthy.
Fuzz Bucket is sweet, calm, and handsome (after he gets a bath). He seems like such a loyal companion. It is amazing to know each and every one of them.

Right now we have around 31 dogs at the shelter: 7 up for adoption, 2 adopted and being held, 1 in boarding, 1 in foster and 20 in quarantine, waiting to be fully vetted.

Every day it's fun to go in and see if anyone has been adopted while I'm gone or if any new dogs came in. I like to see when a dog in quarantine is put up for adoption, that's extra special. You got to see their progress all the way through, from the nervous, dirty or sick dog that comes in to the happy, healthy, excited dog that gets adopted to a forever home.
Mainly I exercise the dogs by walking them or letting them out in the run. I watch them for any signs of injuries or health problems, give them some one-on-one attention and treats, spot-clean if they use the bathroom, check their water, ect. I also clean the cats litter-boxes, offer them blankets if they don't currently have any (blankets and towels have to be washed a lot) and do other odd-jobs around the area. Anything to make it easier on the staff members.

Volunteering is different at each shelter/rescue/humane society but no matter what it can be a rewarding experience.

Our dogs up for adoption are LouLou, Durango, Cinnamon, Lester, BJ, Karmin, and Snoops (Snoopy, but most of us just call him Snoops or Snoop-dog).

The dogs waiting the turn are Thor (black and white mix-breed), Morton (Boxer mix), Meteor (border collie x lab female, 9 months old), Hancock (shepherd mix), Jimmy (lab mix), Niko (pug mix), Coco (yorkie x crestie? Came in with her sister, Pebbles), Pebbles, Fuzz Bucket (Pyrenees mix), Hartley (beagle), Clementine (some sort of rat-terrier mix girl), Benji (an elderly terrier mix who is blind from cataracts but doesn't let it slow him down the least bit), Danby (collie mix), Ryker (shar pei mix), Dottie (shar pei mix), Marlot (pit-bull mix female), Marx (Shepherd mix male), General (pit-bull mix), Coco (the other Coco, a pit-bull and brought in with Brandy), Brandy (a brown and white pitbull) and Garrick (a bull-dog in foster because he was so skinny when he came in he needed some special attention before adoption).

I know I'm rambling a bit, I just love to talk about all these awesome animals though. : )

Hancock and Niko were both adopted! Yay! Not only that, but Fuzz Bucket and Jimmy got back to his owners and Durango is up for adoption and loving all the attention he gets.

Clementine, Cinnamon, Coco and Pebbles, Hartley, and Uno have also been adopted in the last few days!!

Someone is interested in one of our long-term residents, sweet and playful Karmin. I sure hope she finally finds the perfect family for her. : )

Pictured are Morton the American Bulldog mix boy (my goof-ball, he just adores playing. I love him so much) who is up for adoption and a picture of Cinnamon, the female Aussie mix who was just brought to her forever-home. Best of luck to her and the other adopted dogs!! I hope they enjoy their life to the fullest and bring lots of smiles to their new best friends.

Things went very well today, though they were busy as always. A couple of strays were dropped off but two of the dogs were taken to Petsmart and were hopefully adopted (I went home before I could hear).
The warm weather isn't phasing the dogs, though they do need more water and access to shade. The building is also air conditioned for everyone's comfort. : )

Karmin, a long-time resident, is finally pending adoption!! Yay! She is such a sweet, awesome girl, I think it was just her size that threw people off. I'll be so happy when she can finally get the family she deserves.

I think the young border collie mix, Grimes, may have also been adopted today. I saw a family interested in him. He hasn't been here long, but he is such a handsome little guy that people fall for him right away.

LouLou, Durango, Spike (the maltese), BJ, Delilah (the pit bull puppy), Lester, Benji (the blind dog), LadyBug, Cannon, and Meteor are also up for adoption. Comet is being held but is already adopted.

Waiting their turn to get past quarantine are Ryker, Danby, Margot, Caliber, Grant, Marx (I love him, he's such an awesome dude), Brandy, Coco, Malloy (a new puppy, 4 months old, German Shepherd mix), a female boxer, Gatsby and a Dachshund.

Garrick the bulldog, Clancy, Shelby and Katia the lab are in foster homes currently.

Morton was adopted!! So awesome, he was such a great dog so he deserves the best home ever. Spike the maltese mix will likely be adopted soon too, as he is very friendly and so cute and little. He likes to dance on his back-legs, just like our Maltese mix, Blonquita, does. : )

Pictured::::
Cannon the German Shepherd mix, about 1 year-of-age. Durango the 7-year-old Boxer mix (with white markings) and Spike the Maltese mix.
