Exclamation Alfy: BMDx Desperate in the desert

I had seen this beautiful dog roaming the desert, obviously lost and frightened, several times. I attempted to lure him closer each time but he was mistrustful and could not be coaxed. Out of the blue, Alf showed up on my porch on February 13. Because he would not let me near, I had no idea how poor his condition was. He continued to visit daily for food and water and eventually began sleeping, outside, on the deck. It took about a month before he allowed me to get close enough to touch him. His condition was shocking. Underneath that thin, dry, patchy coat, there was only skin and bones, he had all sorts of desert thorns embedded in his skin

That was almost 6 months ago and now Alfy is ready for his forever home. His options are limited, here in Northern Arizona. The rescues are full and all the shelters are not safe for a big black dog, no matter how beautiful. We don't have any no-kill shelters, locally.

I had planned on returning to the east coast in May. Because I wanted alf to have a better chance at a new life I've post poned the trip multiple times. I can't postpone it any long. My parents are elderly, my father very sick and my mother needs my help.

He's a such a special and beautiful dog! For all that he has been through he is willing, eager to please and very sociable. He deserves a wonderful happily ever after home.

I am willing and eager for your suggestions and advice. Is there anyone involved in rescue whose organization has room? Maybe your're ready for a new dog and alfy is THE ONE!

If you'd like to know more about Alfy send me a PM.

Hi Cyndianco
That is an amazing story! And Alf really was lucky that you could be his angel. He wouldn't have had much of a chance without you. The desert can be a rough place for anyone, not just a wandering dog! Wow how many people would postpone a trip because of a dog they wanted to save! That is fantastic! I hope Alf finds a forever home!

He's amazing, you really are an angel to have saved him!

Wish I could help but i'm much too far away, i'd imagine such a beautiful dog would be snapped up here as BMD types are very scarce in our rescues and highly sought after.

He's a stunning lad and I really hope you find a nice home for him.

I need to find him a forever soon! I HAVE to go back east and I will be staying with friends and family, while there. He won't be welcome in thier homes.

Plus traveling in the heat, alone, mean that when I have to make a pit stop I'd have to leave him in the car. Can't do that! And that's all beyond the fact that he's only now just getting in the car and it's been months to get him that far. I'll force him to ride and I'll skip any pit stops (I was a letter carrier, I know how to pee in a cup, if I have to!) if I find him a home. TMI????

Thumbs up Alf , feral BMDx, no longer desperate in the desert!!!

I've been out of my mind the last month and particularly the last two weeks, thinking the worst with regard to Alf's future (or lack of one) I truly felt, in my heart, that euthaniasia was a better option than a shelter, for many reasons.

I absolutely have to get back east, and soon. I set a departure date for August 1st (for about the 12th time) this time I knew I had to stick to it.

I've been emailing and calling rescues all over the country and posting on forums for weeks. On Saturday a horse forum member (yes, i posted on a couple of horse forums, too) referred me to a rescue in Colorado, Big Dogs, Huge Paws. I emailed and recieved and email that same day telling me they would help Alfy! I was psyched. BDHP is actually a national rescue, the one i contacted is located in Colorado. Awesome! Lucky Alf is going to get out of this god forsaken desert! All their dogs are in foster homes, they've got a great program and as far as i could tell they do everything exactly as I would; better, no doubt.
I just broke down and cried for I don't know how long. I was soooo relieved.

Among the many phone calls I made, emails I sent and forums I posted to, was an international Bernese Mountain Dog mailing list. The Berner people stepped right up and began networking to find Alf a home. Monday I was contacted by a woman in California wanting to give our boy a home. She comes with great references, including a well known, responsible BMD breeder/rescue. The family who will be taking Alf has one of her bitches. The breeder is particularly fussy with regard to her puppies' homes. I also contacted their vet. Coincidentally, the adopters live in the same town as my sister, in California. My sister will go over on Monday to do a home check.

I've spoken with the woman and am really confident in her ability and desire to give Alf a wonderful forever home. She has brought 2 rescued berners into her home, one lived to the ripe old age of 12 and the other, a young male, the product of a puppy mill, crossed over just a few months ago, a result of bloat.

On top of that her daughter goes to school in Oklahoma and she's flying her daughter home to help make Alf's transistion easier! Can you imagine?

As planned, Alf will go to the vets on the 21st and I will deliver him to her on the 23. I'll stay in Laguna (yes, this lucky boy is moving to the beach!) for a couple of days to visit with my sister and make sure Alf settles in.

such amazing news! I am so glad you found a place for him and that all your efforts paid off. You've been a blessing to this big guy. Take care, have a safe journey, and good luck back East.
