Default We're doing well with stay/recall

I only have 15' of shooting time. He "arcs" like that a lot because of course, he's blind so he's having to triangulate to my voice as he travels. He will stay for as long as I tell him so far. But his little blonde girlfriend (yellow lab) didn't show up - if she did that would be another story.

must quickly post this - my cable modem is very flaky again. time to call the cable dude. YUCK!

Thank you. I'm very proud of my boy. Of course, I'm very careful - we go at a time of day where the major distraction would be the occasional small child over at the playground. At first this was a challenge. He didn't want to go see them but he would spook and forget to "stay". But he spooks slowly and deliberately so I felt very comfortable with this. The area is large enough that on a particularly quiet day I think I could go 70 or so yards and he'd be fine. But I haven't pushed that test yet. Most was about 30 yards or so. And now we're in the habit of walking out with him next to me but me not holding the leash. he will wander slightly to the left of me and I say "this way" and he's back by my side. He'll stop and sniff something in the grass and I keep going a little. Then say "Okay Ming, Come" and he lopes towards me. I like seeing him with a little sense of freedom. I keep a constant eye out for folks with other dogs - particularly dogs not on their leashes. And of course, when we near the roads, I take hold of the lead again. However, on the last block or two of the walk he gets pretty tired in this hot weather and I just drap the end of the leash over his back and he walks beside me. He's passed a couple of noisy guys in garages this way and he stops and listens to them but that's all. He's gotten past a lot of his jumpiness though I'm sure there are still things out there that might surprise him so I'm only comfortable doing this on the blocks where there is low traffic. I would not trust him on the main drag because the cars go too fast and there is often food or food packages thrown out on the street which he is still learning to stay away from. He knows and responds properly to "Leave it" but he will still pull toward it if I don't see it before he does. He picked up a chicken bone the other day (more of which were there a few days later! do people every pay attention to their front lawns? Yuck!) and he readily "gave" it to me when told.

I'm just very proud of him.
