Default Our new rescue, Jack!

I haven't had a dog since I was a kid. We decided to go look in shelters vs buying, and the second I walked in I knew we had to get a rescue pet. They are so sad, and it's horrible the stuff they have to endure. The animal control in our city literally feels like jail.

Well this guy is getting along great! He's eating and playful. We've had an accident in the house almost every day, but I've been walking him 4 times a day and am pretty confident we will get him housebroken.

As well he got fixed on Monday, we haven't had to use the Elizabethian collar on him since he stays away from his wound. But today he pooped in his cage while we were out an hour for lunch so we had to give him a wash. We kept the water away from his stiches though. He's also leery of my truck and doesn't like to get in. He had a wound on his leg when they picked him up and I think he may have gotten hit by a vehicle, or its my aftermarket exaust scaring him.

Any ideas what he's mixed with? I know black lab,,, maybe pit?

Welcome Neverending, great to have you join us and bless you for rescuing this adorable dog! My "niece-in-law" just adopted a lab/pit earlier this week and he looks very much like your dog so you might be right on his mix. Regardless, he is just too cute and I' glad to hear he is settling in so well.

He's 10 months. Or so his papers say. Yesterday I had him outside 2 hours, he pooped inside 5 min after. I'm sure rescues have a hard time being housebroken. I don't do the harsh noes or the nose rubbing. But it's hard waking up with him at 7:30 am after getting off of work late.

He's mostly going in my gf's son's room.

When he was outside for two hours by himself? Sometimes when dogs are outside by themselves, they just play and forget to take care of "business". Also, do you take him outside when you get home from work or is there someone else at home who can help. I have had nothing but rescue dogs for many years, and when it comes to bathroom time, I always go outside with them and have key words I say. When they go to the bathroom they get verbal praise. Doesn't take long for them to catch on. It can be tiring, but it saves trouble in the house.

Welcome. Jack is beautiful. Congratulations. I also have a black lab mix, fully grown male, with white paws, white on his muzzle, very similar ears to Jack's. Ours is suspected to be black lab - boxer mix.

Thanks guys. One of us takes him out late before bed too. I was out with him during those 2 hours. And for a while I had him leashed to my Truck while I changed the air filter on it. I give him verbal praise and rub his neck and he gets a treat when we get back in. No potty, no treat. I guess I got to be more persistent.

Thanks for the help. Hope you had a great weekend!
