Default Video: Hiking Three Ponds Trail

After weeks and weeks of rain, we finally got a nice enough day to go for along hike. We went to Three Ponds Trail, which we've hiked many times. The creeks were flowing deep and hard after all that rain, and the trail was muddy.

In this video you get to see happy dogs on the hiking trail, Zircon scanning the far shore of one of the ponds while Sophia enjoys swimming in it, and the soudns effects of a wild moose chase! I've always wondered what would happen when dog meets moose and now I know.

We were almost back to the parking lot when Zircon and Sophia dashed into the woods. Hubby and I figured it was the chirp of a chipmunk that got their attention. Well Zircon yipped and yipped, and the yipping kept getting fainter. We figured they were 1/2 mile away and started calling them. Then we heard the thrashing as they chased back towards us. I got out the camera, and then I heard hubby say "It's a moose." I don't think I got anything other than blurry trees on camera (I think maybe you can see a darnk brown spot that may or may not be moose), but you can hear the excited yipping of my dog. I did not know moose could run that fast! That moose was HAULING it as the dogs were chasing. Then the moose ran back along the path we had just hiked. The yipping stopped and for a moment I thought the moose had figured out that he / she was bigger than both of my dogs and could easily take them on. So we backtracked, seeing the huge deep moose tracks along the trail. We had to backtrack about 1/2 mile, calling the whole time, and first Sophia came galloping towards us and then Zircon. Boy were they panting! And Zircon was stiff last night and this morning but I bet he has good memories of the finale to our hike!

I didn't see the moose (not that I would be great at recognizing one anyway!) but the part where Sophia decides to roll in the dirt after her dip made me laugh. She just looked so happy to do it, lol. I also thought Zirc's 'above it all demeanor' while watching Sophia just plop right in for a swim was priceless....such dignity!

You live in a beautiful part of the world Jean. Lucky dogs to get to go on such pretty hikes. Are there ticks in the US? We have paralysis ticks on the east coast of Australia & I'm too afraid to take the dogs on bush walks for the warmer 6 mths of the year as they can kill dogs if not found early enough.

The yipping dog sounded like Tilba barking.
