Default Ashenpaw's New Toy!

Momma gots me a new toy.

Hang 18! Cause I gots dew claws... get it?

I'll get the hang of this yet!

Heheh! Let's grind some rails, Mom!

Story behind this--one of the trainers at work showed us how she used clicker training to get her dog to ride a board for fun. Long story short, soon several of us were hooked on wanting to teach our enthused furkids a new trick! I stopped by the store today and picked Ash up a cheap skateboard and in no time enticed him to put his paws on it. Tomorrow at work for my break we're gonna work on him really pushing the board. Pretty soon we'll have a boarding club at work! Yes... before you all ask, we are crazy!

I taught this to Aslan in a matter of two or three session. While I enjoyed teaching the trick, I never kept it up. I don't think he would remember it now. It's actually pretty easy to teach, if your dog isn't afraid of things moving under his feet.

Ash is pretty fearless, as are most of the dogs we're all interested in getting to do it. Could be fun to have a little skate squad just for kicks. So far Ash enjoys the idea, our living room just isn't big enough to get the board moving. But the training room at work is.

Realized I forgot to post two pictures that were cute...

Wipeout

Phew! Figuring stuff out is hard work!

Great pics. He looks right at home on it.
We have a couple of skateboards at my obedience club. One of the instructors is a mad keen garage saler. One day I showed one to Tilba, she wasn't afraid to put her feet on it & when it moved she wasn't fazed. It surprised me.

Draco, I suspect you'll keep the trick up much better than I did. I'm just not into tricks, although this one was pretty fun.

My manager and I were chatting the other day, she's going to be teaching her eager little show Springer how to ride as well. Her pup is fearless and she wants to maintain that demeanor. She chuckled when I talked about all the 'tricks' I had taught my dogs thinking at that time that I was doing real training. We both laughed out loud when I admitted I have learned so much in the past the year. Sure, we were training... but not quite the same as I am doing now. A whole change in perspective. But she too has opened up realizing that those little gimmicky tricks can be great fun too. Ashenpaw's 'high five', paw wave, shake, roll over, writhing in agony (variation of 'play dead')... they are all connections with him. Both of us have learned a lot from eachother. Me about the competitive and show dogs, and she about about the more casual dog owner. Just like our dogs we shared and traded learning from watching one another.

Well, Ash has successfully pushed the board for about 10 seconds across the training room floor. I rewarded the HECK out of him for it! He turned around and did it again. So he's putting it together rather well. I learned not to ask him to 'get it' because he pounces it and tries to pick it up. That was amusing, but not quite the association I'd intended. It was my mistake though, me being too wordy (and I KNOW better! Just slipped.) 'Get it' is a fetching command. Oopsie! Yep, I'm still a novice trainer who makes boo boos. Figure if I never use that again and encourage the command to ride it we'll loose the idea of carrying it.
