Happy Birthday Summer!!

Could I ask, what are papillons like? I have never meet one in person. Is there any other type of dog that compares.....

Oh gosh, I could write a novel! LOL I just adore this breed...

They're pretty unique dogs imo and no comparison really does them justice. Even though they're spaniels, they are not much like any of the other spaniel breeds I've been around. They're often described as the 'border collie of the toy group'. I've also heard them compared to golden retrievers personality wise. Those two can kind of give you an idea, but it's still not completely accurate.

They're very sweet, soft dogs, very active and outgoing and VERY smart. Supposedly, they're the most intelligent toy breed and one of the most intelligent/biddable dog breeds I'm not sure how they come up with those rankings, but they are probably the smartest dogs I've owned. My GSD was pretty comparable to their intelligence in my opinion. They're scary smart and they use those brains a lot and to the detriment of my things sometimes. But they're clowns and have very fun senses of humor. I am ALWAYS laughing at some antic they've pulled. They're active, to the point of my ex-roommates calling them hyperactive. (and one owned a spitz and the other a lab/bc mix!) But since they're small they don't need that much exercise, they can get it pretty easily indoors. Evenso, they love going outdoors and exploring and going for walks, they just won't be too bad if they miss a day or two of walking. Most are very adaptable to any lifestyle and happy so long as you're with them. They are what I like to call 'supervelcro dogs'. You will never be alone, ever! I called my shelties velcro until we got the paps, but the paps just take the term velcro to a new extreme. They're very people friendly and sociable, everyone is their new best friend. Most are friendly towards other animals, though they do occasionally have some prey drive. They were used as ratters as well as companions. My Summer is not dog friendly either, but most are. I guess the best description is happy, lively and intelligent. They're also probably one of the most versatile toy breeds. I've seen them herd ducks, be used as service dogs, mine have been therapy dogs, they're great at agility (which I do with Summer), obedience, etc.

Of course individuals vary. My older girl, Summer, is about as close to a toy sized border collie as you can get whereas her sister is a low-mid energy little dog. Almost every pap I've met have had the same happy, outgoing, people-loving personality (with the exception of a few really badly bred/rescued from traumatic situations)

It may just be a coincidence but most people I know with paps have also had herding breed dogs. We had a GSD and shelties before the paps. I often see people that have GSDs, shelties, border collies, or aussies and then papillons.

Sorry for the novel, I can talk a lot when it comes to paps.
