Default Any idea what mix my dog might be?

I got Riley from a kid with a box of puppies a few years ago, and always wondered what he came from. His head comes up to about my waiste when standing, and I think he weighs about 73 lbs or so from the last vet visit. He's not friendly with strangers and seems to despise men in general besides me. He's very protective of our house, although he's never bitten anyone. He has an extrememly loud, deep pitch bark and sounds like a hound dog- kind of drawn out. He's very active and loves to play outside with a tennis ball for hours. Seems pretty good with kids, but does get annoyed with them from time to time. My wife thinks he's mostly coonhound, but I don't know. Any ideas? I think I attached a picture, but we'll see.

from me and Jake (Irish Water Spaniel)

Have a good time on the forum, just jump right in.

Looking forward to more posts & pictures.

Unfortunately, I can't help you with suggesting a breed, other than to say he's a handsome dog. We don't have coonhounds in the UK, he's far too big to have any jack Russel in him but if you made his head a lot smaller I would say he resembles JR.

He sounds like he enjoys his life. If he plays for hours with tennis balls, does he actually 'crack' them. My dog does! I've stopped playing with tennis balls - and yet he can carry a swallow and not injure it.

Hi dleeds and welcome to the forum.

From that pic he could be coonhound, but a side view of the snout would be helpful. My next guess would be some kind of Pointer. A side shot of the body would help for that. Riley definitely looks like an outdoorsy dog!

Default New pics of Riley

Thanks for all the replies. Riley does Bay when he gets started after something in the yard. Here is a pic of Riley from the side, and one of him and my wife that you can see his snout really well, and how big his head is. He does destroy his tennis balls, and pretty much any toy he has. He gets those cheap sqeaky dog toys and usually in less than 5 minutes has all the stuffing ripped out to get at the sqeaker to play with that.

I would guess a type of bird dog or hound mixed with maybe some springer spaniel. Very nice looking fellow and he is ok to protect long as he goes no further to bite, let him bark and tell you somebody is around.
