Default When is it time?

Frodo my beloved dog has nasal cancer and I'm trying to figure out when he has had enough. He is showing signs of slowing down. My heart is breaking and I don't know what to do. :'(

Oh I am so sorry to hear about Frodo's illness..you must be heartbroken! What type of cancer does he have? I have been through this several times with my dogs, breast cancer, TCC, osteosarcoma.. but some cancers are more effectively treated than others. Has your vet made any recommendations for treatment? My vets were very helpful in deciding when to let go.. but my dogs were the most helpful. With Chessie I had 18 unexpected months of good quality life for her and when the chemo was no longer effective, she went into a rapid decline and just "let me know". Keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm so sorry to hear about Frodo's diagnosis. I'm sure your vet will be seeing him regularly even if he is not having any cancer treatment. The monitoring will give an insight to how it must be affecting him.

I agree with Janice, they do let you know.

It's a real struggle emotionally, wondering what is the right thing to do, when will 'the time' come? You will know, and no matter what anyone else says, only you can make the decision. For now, enjoy the time you have with him. Sending lots of good wishes.

I am so very, very sorry. I have had to make that decision to many times. The first time I made the mistake of hanging on to long and letting my beloved Irish Sett3er suffer to much, to long, and said I would never do that again. We have a saying on my golden retriever forum--better one week to soon than one day to late.

All of mine except one stopped eating. Wouldn't even take a nibble of favorite foods. I let them go then. But my 2ed Irish setter had cancer in his knee, diagnosied about 3 months after turning 12. My vet said it was such an aggressive kind that in about a week he most likely would not be able to get up, not eat. Long story short, I had him exactly 10 weeks to the day of diagnosis. I took him fishing every day and he swam, chased shore birds, tormented crabs in shallow water. We let him eat what loved most--fruits, veggies, tossed salad, and the same dessert we had. On July 8 1997, he was not so active at the beach (actually the bay, bu we called it the beach, tho I did take him to the actual beach a couple of times). The next day limping on the front leg on that side--he could not bend his knee, he did a bunny hop). He fell and couldn't get up. I knew the cancer had spread and he would no longer be able to go to the beach. I gave him a big dish of Buttered Pecan ice cream and my vet sent him to the bridge. He endjoyed life to the fullest to the end. I don't know if this helps or not, but it is my expericnes with this horrible decision.

Frodo still eats his food and wants everyone else's food. He still plays outside and can still do great athletic jumps to catch a frisbee. But there are definitely signs that he is slowing down. Its called malignant fibrous histeocytoma. I just wish he would tell me when he's had enough. He is my soulmate. Maybe he will tell me in some way and I will find the strength to let him go.

If you have gone through this with another dog, I think you will know... Not much of an answer I know but I think you have to have been through it.
I am not much help today am I?

He will let you know and you will understand what he is telling you. He may be getting a little slower, but it sounds like he is still enjoying life...Enjoy it with him!!!
