Default Kool Collars and Cooling Vests

Hello Dog Forum Friends,

Wells it's in the 90s here in So AZ soon to be in the triple digits through September. I was considering purchasing a 'Kool Collar' for my dog and possibly a cooling vest. I see them online and was wondering if anyone out there has used them. Soon I will be getting up around 05:00 to walk him as the heat here is relentless in the summer. Although it's light out we need to get out the door and back home BEFORE the sun comes up over the mountains. I feel like little Gizmo in Gremlins........"bright lights, bright lights!!!" and we run for cover... Has anyone tried these?

You might beware hot pavement too. I am sure you have thought of that too. How about a short hair cut? Being dark furred doesn't help.

Yes I've thought of the pavement. It cools down overnight, but can heat up quickly. That's another reason why we get out the door so early. It's light out but no sun yet. We live on the east side so we keep an eye out over the eastern mountains and stay on the shady side of the street if we can't beat the sun home! We don't walk again until the sun starts to go down over the western mountains. Thankfully I can see both from my area.

He's a short haired dog so I won't cut him closer. I've noticed his coat does get hot quickly, but it cools down quickly as well. I'm still considering the Kool Collar or a vest to walk in mornings just to alleviate some of the early morning heat.

This article, from Whole Dog Journal, reviews several different cooling vests:

WOW - thanks so much the article was amazing! I am considering the Cool Vest by Radic. We do not have the option here of streams or lakes although I think AZ has more lakes than many other states - go figure. Not here in Tucson tho. (I do see boats everywhere!) I am however, going to call local pet stores and see if they have the vests or any collars. We have been walking for 7 years in the Arizona dawn without aid, but it's time to look at options I didn't know we had. We only walk when its light BEFORE the sun comes up.

Thanks everyone for your advice!!

You might fill a kiddy pool with water just before you leave and your dog can get in it when you get back if needed. Also it would be there for a long cool drink before you get inside.
Great article too.

Default Kiddie Pool

I've thought about the pool, but with his history of past seizures (you wouldn't have known) the Vet was against it. I would need to be home with him so it's still an option when I'm here. I may pick up a cheap one to use on the weekends or when I have extra time during the week. Thanks for putting that back in my head again.
