Default Small dark stools

Not the ones you sit on.

Sadie & I continue down the road of allergy-exploration. Got her off the Royal Canin ($56 for 7.7 pounds) because she was still itchy even on that 14K food. Cavalier rescue lady recommended a salmon/brown rice kibble, so she's on that, pumpkin, digestive enzymes, & 1/2 a Benadryl. She poops frequently, but the volume is way down, as is the size, & the stool is very dark.

What is happening?

Sounds like she's making better use of the food and wasting less. Be careful with the pumpkin. Pumpkin can give them the runs and it can plug them up.

Well utilized food = small, low-volume poops (less waste).
Poorly utilized food = larger voluminous poops (more waste).

Small Dark poo isnt neccessarily bad, Zoey (shes a pug) is on a raw diet and her poo looks like that, and its usually hard as a rock! haha... ok TMI.

Anyway, the skin irritation on the other hand must be really crappy for sadie, id say try Lotus, not sure where you live but you should be able to order it online. Their food is USDA inspected and certified human grade, and their dry food is all oven baked.

If she has trouble with that, you can have her eat white rice and plain un seasoned cooked chicken for now until you find a pet food that she can handle.

(i give zoey the rice/chicken home cooking when she has a sore tummy or is sick)

Well, that's a relief -- maybe it's much-a-poo about nothing?

It's just that it this is a drastic change from what she was doing before. Plus, being anthropomorphic, I would personally prefer to get rid of more poo than less. However, since I now know that (at least in dogs) less poo isn't a bad thing, I suppose I can stick with the current plan a while longer before I worry about it anymore.

But I always thought brown was the preferred color? These are almost black.

Color of feces usually just reflects what they eat. Only in certain circumstances is it reflective of a concerning condition. If her new food is darker in color, then that's why her poop is.

I thought of that, but the new food is actually lighter in color. Do you think the pumpkin would do that? Or maybe the oil?

Whatever, I think y'all have allayed my fears. I never thought it was anything serious as Sadie is as rambunctious as ever. I'm just an over-protective mom, and we Virgos are worry-warts!
