Unhappy Dolly is refusing to eat

Dolly Parton is my 12+ cocker spaniel, rescued from the pound 4 years ago. She has always been a stubborn dog, not afraid to let you know when she needs space and when she needs love. 3 weeks ago she was diagnosed with hypothyroid disease. She was given levothyroxine and rimadyl for joint pain. 2 weeks after that she was also seen to have infectious gums and needed 5 teeth extracted. She was given much consideration while going under-- iv and gentle anesthetic. She first seemed to recover very well, eating soft dog food with her prescription doses. Going home from surgery she was given ketoconazole and cephalexin to help speed up her skin healing with help of the thyroid medication. After 3-4 days i noticed that she was puking up her meals that were administering her prescription. She has since refused to eat voluntarily for the past 4 days.

O! the vet just called.. she is expecting a positive heartworm test and her liver is enlarged. I asked if any of these could explain the loss of appetite. They are unsure.

Does anyone have a similar experience or words of wisdom to getting her to eat?

Poor Dolly, she certainly has been through a lot. Prior to one of her surgeries my dog was on rimadyl and had a very severe gastric reaction to it. Rimadyl is an NSAID and they can be rough on the digestive system. After most of her surgeries and for other issues, my dog has been on antibiotics, including cephalexin, which can also cause tummy probems and lack of appetite. Ketoconazole is an antifungal medication and can cause vomiting or diarrhea as well. While she was in the hospital they tried to entice my dog to eat by giving her Royal Canin RS (for dogs recovering from critical illness or for nutritional support after surgery- not something you'd want to feed on a long term basis) but she wanted no part of it and she ended up losing seven lbs during her hospital stay. For subsequent stays I've had to drive to the medical center and hand feed her chicken, roast beef, cheese, etc. just to get her to eat and upon release keep her on cooked chicken and rice or beef and rice while she has been on medication and transition her slowly back to her regular diet. Dolly seems to have had a lot going on and I think I'd talk to your vet and ask about some short term nutritional support and/or modifying her diet while she is on her medications.

You could also ask your vet if there's any different meds they coud try as Dolly has had a reaction to Rimadyl it's just a thought! Hope Dolly is back to her normal self soon and starts eating normaly again Keep us posted on any updates! ATB

Default Big updates!

Big Updates.

Dolly was just released from her 48 hour hospital stay. She is now at home, eating shredded chicken and drinking plenty of water. She seems to be somewhat normal in her lazy activities and demeanors. But she is not out of the woods yet.

What the internal veterinarian discovered during xray and ultrasound is what will have me worried for months or years to come. She was diagnosed with 1. Cushing's disease-- small masses on her adrenal glands and spleen that affet the pituitary gland. 2. the beginnings of a congealed bladder, the bile solidifies and if left untreated will rupture ( surgery to be scheduled in the future-- god willing ). 3. Heart worm disease-- she will be on the preventative route as she is a major risk for arsenic injections.

BUT SHE'S EATING!! which is the precursor to any treatment. I will take it day by day-- each day she is not suffering and continues to eat I will take it as a sign of her wanting to live--.
