Exclamation Dog miscarried even though she was spayed more than 1 year ago

I was completly cought off guard when I walked in and found tiny furless babies on the floor and my dog trying to clean them. She was spayed November 2008. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this? I will call the vet and see what they say on Monday but this is going to be driving me crazy until then. Any answers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Multiple pups would imply a complete uterine horn and ovaries, and thus, no spay. Was the bitch yours when it was theoretically spayed, or were you just told it had been spayed?

There's also the possiblity that she stole them - was she able to get out while not under your supervision?

I took her to the vet to get her spayed. Shes a big dog and it was obvious when she went into heat. She hasn't gone into heat since she was fixed. The smell last night was awful. The reason I went in to check on her was because I thought she may have pooped in the house, which would be really out of character for her. There was a little mess on her bed next to the puppies. Not as much as I would have expected but that could be because they weren't fully developed. We have a big fenced in backyard and I would have noticed if she was carrying puppies in when I let her in. I just can't figure this out. She doesn't even have access to male dogs, unless they are really good jumpers Shes an indoor dog.

In that case the only thing I can thing of is that the vet somehow messed up the spay. Weird.

Oops I'm forgetting my manners - welcome to the forum!

I hope you saved the 'evidence' for the vet!! (As offputting as it might be, it's important that they see it for themselves.)

My concern is that you said there was very little other uterine matter that you found. It might me that the miscarriage was incomplete and there's still placenta inside her.

I'd be sitting on the doorstep of the vets when they open tomorrow morning. In the meantime keep an eye on her for signs of fever.

Thank you all so much! I did save the 'evidence' and put them in the freezer. Not very pleasant but it was the best I could come up with. She is doing fine. I'm pretty sure they are puppies. They were only about 3 inches long. My biggest concern is that she could have been carrying these in her for over a year. I don't know if that's possible but the smell was so unbelievable. She was in my daughters room and there wasn't anything there when I put my daughter to bed 2 hours earlier. I hope to tell you all how silly I've been and that she caught them (She catches rabbits and squirrelsfrom time to time) I'll let you know what the vet says. Thanks again!

Question could she have found a rabbits nest and its baby rabbits?? just a thought that she might have carried her "prey" in? Baby bunnies are very small and hard to tell what they are, naked and everything at birth.

I was thinking that a spayed dog having puppies a year later would be really something for veterinary science and wondering if she possibly found some baby animals somewhere?

Will be interesting to know if they are puppies or some other animal.
