Default Chessie is being hospitalized....again!

And just when you think everything is calming down....

It was a week ago today that I had to take Chessie in to the vet center (where she had the sonogram and they took a urine sample for analysis) and it was determined she had a UTI. She was placed on clavamox pending the results of the urine culture with the plan being either to keep her on the clavamox for an additional week or, if the UTI was a clavamox-resistant strain, to move her to another antibiotic and begin her on a two week regimen of that.

I got a call from the vet center. She has a somewhat uncommon UTI that is both proteus and e-coli based and will require hospitalization for a 7-10 day course of IV antibiotics as the antibiotics that can be administered orally are not effective with her type of UTI infection She has to remain at the hospital as she will be on an IV 24/7 for the treatment and fluids and the cost of treatment will be about $1500. Left untreated, this type of infection can be fatal and, because of her hip implant we have to extra vigilant about any infection as it is. I was very surprised, because she has been doing very well and has been totally asymptomatic since that first day. Her vets told me that the current infection levels aren't yet in the discomfort zone for her which is why all has seemed well, but she needs to begin treatment asap. So.. tomorrow I am taking her in. Ordinarily, visiting is discouraged while your dog is hospitalized so as not to stress the dog when you leave, however, in Chessie's case I will be going to be with her daily, some mornings, some days, and some late night hours as, thankfully, they are open 24 hours. Last time she (ok maybe both of us ) had some separation issues and her vets agreed (even recommended, lol) that I come as last time she refused to eat. During that stay her in-charge vet wouldn't release her until she ate and I had to go spend two hours sitting on the tile floor of one of the exam rooms until she finally ate some chicken from my hand so she could come home. This poor dog has surely had more than her share; please keep a good thought that she responds quickly and can come home as soon as possible and I'll update when I know more.

Oh no Janice. Poor Chessie. I really hope this treatment is going to get rid of this infection. 7-10 days is a long time to be separated, for both of you. I'm so glad you will be able to visit anytime. I'm keeping you both in my thoughts and hoping Chessie has a quick recovery. Hugs to you both from Lucy and I.

Oh my God poor chessie.
Im keeping fingers crossed over here for a quick recovery.

Now I wonder if that is the same one the other girl has with the doberman where the uti has refused to give up. Maybe show her this thread so she can ask her vet.

Give Chessie a belly rub from me!

Oh Janice Iam sorry to hear this about poor Chessie! It sound as though she is going to be in very capable hands! You wouldn't have thought a UTI could cause so much trouble. 7 - 10 days is going to be a long time with lots going on but I am sure she will be just fine But considering that you will be allowed to see Chessie this will help some what. She will be home soon. Give her a gentle hug from me and my girl and tell her it's going to be ok. Hope she is given the very best in treatment. Chessie come home soon for your mom. ATB Janice xxx Keep us updated too!

Oh no! Poor Chessie (and you) just can't seem to catch a break! I'm so sorry you're both going through this Janice. Please know you will be in my thoughts and hopefully after this, Chessie can have a nice long run of NO VET VISITS!!! Hugs to you!
