Default Help - Broken Dew Claw

We have just noticed Cassidy licking at her front leg. Her dew claw is broken at the base and pointing in the opposite direction. It looks very painful and she won't let us examine it. She's getting around okay, but I'm not sure what to do!

With Greyhounds, when an injury like this happens, they go ahead and remove the dewclaw. Some people have both removed at the same time. While it isn't exactly necessary, it does help prevent them springing that toe or breaking it while catching the dewclaw on something, as happened to yours.

Well overnight it appears that she chewed it off and it is now down to the pink, fleshy part. I spoke to one of the vet techs at the shelter and she told me to put some triple antibiotic on it and bandage it and to check it 2-3 times per day. I'll call my vet in the morning to corroborate but the good part is she's feeling good! It's supposed to hit 60 degrees here today and we were supposed to take her on a hike with her doggie friends, but not so sure that's a good idea now . Although she will have a bandage on it...thoughts?

Yeesh! Doctor Dog! I guess it depends on where and how you hike. My concern would be that the bandage comes off and / or she takes a dip in some dirty water and it could get infected.
