Default Enterococcus Infection

Coda has a Enteroccus Infection. Now we know what we are dealing with, it's trying to find something to cure it
The vets have tried 13 different antibotics on her culture and non of them have had any effect on this infection. 3 more to test, if non of these work she has to go on a drug called Cloranfenicol. This drug is banned in North America and Europe on humans, only used in third world countries. If she goes on this drug, I have to wear gloves to handle it. It is linked to deteriorating bone marrow, in humans.
If she goes on this drug on want to look at supplements to put Coda on to help protect her bone marrow.

Ouch sounds like a nasty bacteria and antibiotic. Hope it takes care of the infection!

Sounds really awful both the infection and the drug to help cure it
What is the infection and what does it affect? Would surgery help? Give Coda a gentle hug from me and my girl and I will send you both a Hope there maybe alternative drug to help Coda ATB xxx

Sorry to hear Coda is poorly.

My Simba had high levels of Enterococchus last year when she was sick, but she just had some antibiotics and the vet thought that sufficient. She's been ok since.

I hope you manage to find something to keep Coda's bone marrow safe. *hugs*

ok Coda was on Zeniquin for 3 weeks. One week later and I find blood in her urine. Soo not impressed. Called the vet. Waiting for a response. This has been going on Since Dec 21/09. Over $600 and no cure.

I think you have been very patient, and now you want answers. I would seriously speak to the practice manager/owner of the surgery and also a governing body of vets and ask what the heck is going on.
Still no joy speak to a solicitor about the problems you experiencing. Good Luck ATB

Maybe a second opinion wouldn't be out of line. You don't need to mention it to your regular vet at this point but maybe a fresh set of eyes would see something else.

is this the whole thing that started with her UTI?? omg.. poor coda..

There's a version called
Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE)

http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dhqp/ar_vre.html
which migth be what she's having since it seems like it's antibiotic resistent

Maybe that page can give yous tuff to search on before you take her back to the vet for more meds. I am keeping fingers crossed for the poor girl.

Be sure to give the whole course of antibiotics. Stopping too soon is one of the reason the bateria become resistant.

Hey Monkey. yes is the UTI we have been dealing with.
The vet is putting her on Cloranfenicol. Picked up 250 pills today. Fingers crossed this works or all have to take her to a new vet.
techie she has always gotten the whole course of her meds and they were given at the exact same time every day.
