Cool Chessie's hip replacement progress

Chessie had to go in this morning for xrays under anesthesia to assess how her hip replacement/implants are healing and I just picked her up about an hour ago. The good news is that her hip is healing very well and they are very pleased with what the xrays are revealing; good attachment and adhesion, etc. I was so pleased to hear that. The "hmm, ok" news is that the cruciate ligament surgery is taking longer to heal since both surgeries were done at the same time. I had been hoping to hear that she could finally increase her activity level but she has to be "confined indoors with restricted activity" for another month and she still has to use the sling for stairs to go outside. No running, jumping, playing etc. On the positive side, I am able to increase the length of her "walks" a little now and as long as the surfaces are not wet or slippery and most of that can be done without the sling; hopefully even going completely around the block. They want her to walk, albeit slowly, for increased distances to build up the muscles in her leg. Apparently everything I have researched on this surgery is proving true, that the recuperative period is long and has to be monitored very carefully but the results are well worth it. We have another evaluative check up in a month sp we are hoping for additional progress by then. It's so hard to keep her so restrained when I can see how badly she wants to play and run after the squirrels and rabbits she sees outside. "Soon" is a very hard concept to get across to a dog.

By keeping her on the leash and walking her, slowly, she will be forced to use her leg and thus, muscle it !.Good news as a whole, you might want to ask the vet if aquatherapy/swimming would help.

No, dogs don't understand 'soon,' I think they just know "now" and "never."
I'm glad to hear that there haven't been any surprises, even thought it sounds like you still have a long road ahead of you. I hope it continues to go uneventfully.

Thanks for the good wishes. The center where she had her surgery has swim therapy on site and I was surprised myself that the vets there did not suggest this yet. The vet also put her back on the duramax. Initially I was opposed to this and wanted to negotiate only putting her on for three months and then checking her again but when the vet said no, no that they wanted to see her again in a month and only wanted her on the duramax until then I felt much better about it. We took our first walk around the block this evening. I waited until dark as Chessie gets very excited when we run into other dogs, moreso now that she is has been "out of circulation" for awhile and I knew she would start dancing and doing all the things she is not supposed to if we did meet up with one. I took the sling with me since we needed it for the stairs anyway and just sort of supported her lightly with it while walking. I was glad it was dark for dignity's sake too, lol, as it was kind of like handling a 75lb marionette as she was just so excited to be out on a walk at all and we were going in circles for awhile there :-)
