Uh-oh, Borzoi morning sickness? (Seriously! Do dogs get morning sickness when they're pregnant?) What do Femka and the guys think?

Neat new signature, Borzoimom!

Here is galina- uh obviously stressed.. lol.. Her incission is a little red but after calling the vets- they said that was normal as the skin unfolds from the internal fold of the skin in the incission. She is already growing hair back on her side ( thank God.. lol..) and as you can see- none for the wear.
Ignore the comforters under her. They are old and still on the floor to protect the carpet from the blood from the heat.
The incission is longer with her than what would normally be. This is because with such a deep chested dog- her uterus is really high up. ( hmmm no wonder why normally they have small litters.. hmmm..)
Anyway- Galina says hello in her typical style- upside down, spread eagle without a care in the world. YOu can still see the 'waxing" on the tips of the teats. This occurs because of hormone changes to 'clean out " the breasts. Usually this shows up 5 days after natural breeding- however, I have found out it shows up earlier in a artifical insemination as its implanted in the uterus.

Borzoi mom,
I didn't know borzoi had small litters, what is the reason for that and what's the usual number of pups?.
i didn't know that pregnant dogs had morning sickness cos none of my bitches had them.

Morning sickness was very rare in my shepherds. However considering a Borzoi has little body fat, the acid from the hormones can make them feel "sick in the morning". It only lasts a few days.
Naturally bred- the litter size is usually 6-8. Once in a while more, but not often. Inseminated- as this put into the uterus for immediate conception, the litter sizes are usually much bigger. Its strange that a dog of this size would have small litters. It is possible to get a large litter- but the fickelness of progrestrone and LH levels in sighthounds, usually makes the litters smaller. Galina came out of a litter of 9 - natural bred.. lol. But that is alot. Its so odd because I have heard of Irish setters having as many as 20.. I think I would totally faint!!!
Galina has been seperated from her brother for weeks now. In their behavior, each were obviously interested in the other when I know medically speaking, she would not have conceived ( relax people- I would not breed a sister to her brother.. just making a point.. lol.. ) Considering that the heat cycles of 18 months to 24 months is totally normal in the breed, coupled with small litters for such a large breed and their sheer size is probably why there were like 600-700 borzois registered last year, compared to 10's of thousands of labs, goldens etc. Waiting lists are almost totally the norm in this breed. ..
