Default Jewel & I attacked!

We live on a skinny U shaped street and our house is on the bend of the left leg. Because it is skinny all the houses on the inside of the legs are back to back and our houses actually faces the side of the house across the street. There are 5 houses long there and our mail box is at the end of the street. I have been nervous passing the 3rd house for a couple of years. They have a daughter who gets what she wants and she wanted a pit bull and she got a pregnant one and then insisted on keeping all 4 pups and naturally parent's agreed. However, something happened to one--I don't' know what, and then they started chaining two out front. Have a 10 foot chain attached to something in garage and then 2 6' chains attached to the end to form a Y and had a dog on each end of the Y. When you walk by they would be lunging and barking and not a normal type bark. One got loose a year ago and bit the 22 year old boy next door when he walked down to get the mail. Gia was in the yard and saw it and managed to get the dog away from Josh, but he has scars where it grabbed him just above his ankle. He did not go to the doctor, did not file a report. Doesn't know if the dog slipped or broke his collar or broke chain. It got lose another time and killed the little dog that belonged to the house across from us. It was running loose, so nothing was done as both were loose.

Dec. 11 I was walking home from getting the mail and as I walked along looking thru my mail out of the corner of my eye I saw one of the dogs charging at me. Just as he grabbed for my leg I jerked it and he got a mouth full of my pants, which he ripped. Gia was in the garage and she called him and he came back to her and then started after me again, but she got him. She called out to me "Did you go down" and I just yelled back no and moved as fast as I could with sciatica. Since then I either drive down to get the mail, or walked around the bend, down the other leg and back to our mailbox. I have not walked down that leg to get to our box.

We got Jewel Sunday Feb. 17 and Sat. the 232 I was taking her for a short walk around the bend. I had gotten down to the 4 house which is on the bend like ours, and Dina called me to come into the garage and see the candles she had made. PJ and I went in and we talked a few minutes and then walked out. Were standing about 3 feet outdid her raised garage door right at the edge of the driveway when a Pit bull came around the corner of her house. He came up to PJ and sniffed around on her, but she paid him no attention--I guess due to her show dog training--and he moved off into the yard next door. Dina said she wished they would fix it so their dogs didn't get out. She had seen them out a couple of times and had filled in the hole they dug under the fence once.

About that time 2ed pit came charging around the corner and was only 4 feet from us when it came around the corner and I saw it. Jewel was up against my leg and my hand was on her neck. She was watching the street and didn't even see it and I didn't have time to react. It lunged at he and got my hand. IO yanked my hand it got hold of her. She tried to run away, got to the end of her leash, turned and tried backing up and slipped her collar. By the then the first one was after her as well. She ran down the side of Dina's garage, but they got her down, one on her head, one on her rear legs. I started hitting them as hard as I could with her leash & collar and Dina grabbed something out of the garage and started hitting them. Poor PJ was not fighting back, but was screaming and had a look of terror in her eyes and I will never forget either. All she was doing was trying to get up and get away. I don't think she had ever encountered a vicious dog in her life. (continued with reply post)

Dina and I were having no effect on those two dogs whatsoever. Then a guy came running with a board and started beating them. Dina lives in the 4th house down, the dogs at the 5th and this guy in the 6th. He beat them with the board broke and they wre still after her. Finally they backed off panting so hard I thought their hearts would give out. She made a move to get up and they were on her again. The guy kept beating and they did backup and he got between them and her and when they started in again he jabbed them with the jagged end of the board About that time a police car arrived and they got ropes on the dogs and got them over and in the patrol car. Then an ambulance arrived and then Animal control. Turns out the guy, his wife and two small kids ahd only moved in a month agito. He is in law enforcement and works nights. He was up and their heard PJ screaming and Dina and I yelling, came out, saw what was going on so he grabbed a board and came to help and his wife called 911 and told them a lady and her dog were being attacked by 2 dogs.

I was shaking so bad an Dina ran and got a chair for me to sit. When I was beating the dogs with her leash I had been slinging blood all over me and her--had not realized how bad my hand was gashed. The medics were tending to my hand and wanted to take me to the ER as it was cut to the bone. But I said no, I had to get PJ to the vet. I didnt' know how badly she was injured, how much blood on her was hers and how much was mine. Police and Animal Control took pictures of my hand and of Princess Jewel and of my bloody shirt. Officers' wanted to bring me home in the patrol car, but I said I needed to walk. One walked me home. My vet closes at noon on Saturday--are a 1 vet town--but he has an emergency number I called and he said to get her to the hospital. The medics had wrapped my hand with lots of padding, but it was still bleeding thru and my vet told Jerry to get me to the ER (next town) and they would take care of PJ (tech had come in also.

Turns out my hand had to be stitches up as it was cut to the bone and gaped to wide. Also my ring finger was broken where it joins my hand (by a tooth the doc said as it was ripped there) and also punctures wounds long my little finger and side of my hand. Put me on antibiotics and told me I needed to see an orthopedic surgeon ASAP. I was there about 2 hours and Jerry called our vet. PJ had peed and pooped on herself but was to traumatized for a bath or much else, so they cleaned her as best they cooked, gave her powerful antibiotics and sedated her and put he in ICU on a big pile of blankets. My vet called me Sunday morning and said she was doing really well. They had given her a bath, he had shaved some areas. She had puncture wounds on her neck, throat, ears, under her ears, a nasty on the back of her head, inside and outside her left elbow, 5 around her left eye and the lid had been split, several on her let rear leg plus a big gash on the outside of her left leg--when she went down, she was on her right side, her back against Dina's garage, so most damage was on her left side, tho the original attack was on her right side. She had to be in the hospital for 2 days and came home with antibiotic tables that were $10.50 each. As my vet said, that was an obscene price, but he thought due to so many punctures it was the best one for her. I didn't' care, I just wanted her healed. The ortho surgeon put me in a brace that went half way up to my elbow and kept my middle, ring and pinkie totally immobile. Had to wear it for 6 weeks til finger was healed. HOWEVER I have nerve damage in my pinkie on the top and outside, plus along the side of my hand and top of my hand . He doesn't know if it will heal or not. I can't grip anything like a knife to cut up stuff, the steering wheel in the car, brook handle, etc.

Princess Jewel on the other hand has healed nicely and doesn't' seem to have any effects at all from the attack. I had to take her in a week after her release for check and there were 3 dogs in the waiting area and she didn't pay any attention at all to them. Her left eyelid does droop on the inner corner where it was slit, but all her scabs are not gone and fur growing back in shaved areas. I was worried she would be scared of dogs, but it appears I am the one who has that fear now. (continued in reply post)

The day after the attack I was notified by animal control that the dogs HAD NOT had rabies vax and I needed to tell my doctor. They were on 10 day quarantine hold. I told AC I did not want those dogs back on my street. She said she had taken a report from Dina and Dina had told her there was no provocation at all for the attack, it came without warning for no reason. Also took reports from Steve and Shelly, the guy that came to help and his wife who called 911. she had also used her phone to video the attack after they came out. Neither saw the start of it, but knew that both me and Dina had said there was no reason at all for it. Texas has what they call a "one bite law" which means the first time a dog bites, it is returned to owner--unless of course it badly mauls someone. Attacking another dog doesn't count. However, if it is felt the dog will attack again, it may be put down. And another thing--the quarantine place is not allowed to reveal to the victim if the dog was returned to owner or put to sleep without owners permission, which is an idiotic law. When you have been attacked you hae every right to know if the dog is still there or not.

I called a law firm to find out about that couple's insurance, etc. And I was able to get a "Open Record" report from our little police department. It had lists of witnesses, and what evidence--pictures taken by police and animal control and the video taken by Shelly. And that they had been issued 3 citations for each dog--1. Being at large 2. No rabies vax 3. no city tag. Also the AC report that on March 5 an officer had gone to the home and told the couple their dogs were out of quarantine and how much he would cost to get them. I would assume they would have to pay the fines for all 6 citations, for the rabies vax the dogs were given in quarantine, for the 10 days fee in quarantine, buy city tags at $40 each for un neutered dogs (is $10 for spayed or neuters, $40 if not and they ere not). Then another notation on the 7th that they had been notified that they had until 5:00 that afternoon to respond as to what they intended to do about their dogs and if they didn't' respond, the dogs would be euthanized. But nothing else.

The lawyer found that their home owners policy had a dog bite exclusion. He sent me a copy. It said that "any bodily injury or damage caused by any animal owned by, cared for by, or in the custody of the owner of the policy is not covered. He told me to send them a bill and if they didn't' pay it, take them to court. Later I got an e-mail from him that he had called the people and the dogs had been put down becaue they couldn't' afford to get them out.

Yesterday I sent them a copy of my $637 vet bill and told them since they have insurance coverage, the law says they must pay and that once I got all my bills for what my insurance did pay for my treatments, etc, I would be sending the copies of them and my antibiotics to them. I think that $637 vet bill is reasonable. He came in after hours on Saturday and then came in on Sunday, his full day off. He had to clean so man wounds, bath her, did a full blood panel to decide what drugs she could take (making sure her kidneys and liver were okay), and that $145 for those 14 antibiotic pills, plus antibiotics by IV in the hospital, 2 days in there, food, and I cant think of what else off the top of my head. I am being nice to them and only asking for what I am out of pocket. I may have permanent nerve damage to my hand, I am scared to take PJ for a walk even tho I went and got Pepper Spray. We were in Lowes, I saw a lady coming with a pit bull and I couldn't breath and had to get out of the store. When we evacuated for Hurricane Harvey Aug '17. we spent 4 days with my brother & wife & 25 year old son. The son has a pit bull named Kena and I spent a lot of time with her. She is as sweet as can be, but as of right now, I could not be there again with her. Not after the one got after me in Dec. and then the one down the other way got me and Jewel in Feb.

I haven't been here in so long. I'm so sorry about the attack on you and Jewel. It is October now, I hope your hand has healed some and you have no nerve damage. I think this is a lot of peoples worse nightmare when they are walking their dogs. I used to deliver flyers all over the neighbourhood and was chased by a few but never bitten.
