Default Rough Play

My dog is a Shep/Blue Heeler mix. When he plays with a dog his energy level he grabs legs and gnaws on the other dog's upper and side neck just enough to leave lots of slobber. He doesn't bite and just seems to go for the fur making what sounds like grrring noises. Other high energy dogs go along and pounce back on him doing the same. They roll around and love it until they wear each other out.

My question is: Could his rough behavior be due to the fact he's Shep/Heeler mix? Could the leg grabbing and the neck grabbing be a herding trait?

Your thoughts?

Thanks, Robin and Buddy the K9

I have a couple of Poodles and a Golden Doodle and they all play together like that. I think it is just the way some dogs play even if they have no herding breed in them.

I too think it is just play. He could hurt them if he was trying!

Hmmmm, it's good to know he's not the only one that plays rough. I thought it might possibly be the herding thing. He got kicked out of doggie daycamp once because of it lol. Yup.......I got the call to come pick him up because he had three time outs lol.

I did copy and paste the last one. I also got a message out to the administrator. I was getting database errors trying to create a thread and then trying to post. UGH....I thought they had all this fixed!

Thanks, Robin and Buddy the Bambino
