Default Ouch, double ouch

We were busty putting up the fence and I got tired, so sat down on a stool to rest. All of a sudden my feet and legs to my knees were stinging like fire. I was covered in FIREANTS from knees down. Yes, I was barefooted and I know being diabetic I am suppose to always wear shoes.

I had to rush to the water hose and spray them off my legs and feet. and because of the severe burni9gn and stinging I took 3 Benadryl. Even then I did not realize they were fire ants. Not until today (was stung yesterday) when it seemed to have chicken pox on my feet and legs from knees down. I had never tangled with fire ants before.

I never felt them crawling on my feet nor legs and suddenly my legs and feet were on fire with stings. I think they get into position and then all sting ag the same time. I mean, I didn't feel two-three stings and then one or two, then five or sixe--I felt them all at the same time.

They were imported to kill the boll weevils in the cotton fields. I don't know if they did or not, but they all but wiped out the quail population here in Texas by killing the baby birds in the nest on the ground. They have also been known to kill goats and even cows and horses. Nasty buggers that should have been left wherever they were brought from. If creatures were intended to be here, they would be here, not have to be imported becaue that almost always turns sour.

We both ahd to go to our doctor's office today to get blood drawn for our 3 month checks. Noramlly don't see the doctor, just the nurse draws the blood--and no charge to us. However, upon seeing my legs, they had the doc look. He sai to keep antibiotic cream on my feet and legs and if any of the bites gor worse, come right in..

I had never heard of, or met, a fire ant until I moved to Tx (we only have the plain old little generic ones here). There was a lovely park across from where I lived and I often took my dog there to walk. I was sitting on a bench, just idly kicking the dirt under my flip flops and watching my dog play with a stick. All at once I felt an unbelievable pain in both my feet, like they were bursting into flames and jumped up. The pain was amazing and I had no idea what caused it. As I looked down, I did see the ants crawling around the dirt where I had been sitting but it still didn't occur to me it could be from them--I had no idea these evil things even existed! I hobbled home and my neighbor saw me and understood right away what had happened. I have no idea what it was she gave me to put on my feet but as long as I kept applying it, the pain really let up. I laughed when she said that "Yankee city girls probably shouldn't go exploring unsupervised" I always wondered, though, why my dog was able to walk and stand in the same dirt I did and she didn't get bitten at all...these ants don't bother with dogs?

Oh gosh fire ants are horrible! I'm terribly sorry to hear this. I've heard of severe allergic reactions as well.

My feet and legs have healed, but do have a few scars from the worst ones. But what the heck, at 72, why care about a f3ew tiny scars on my feet, LOL. I wanted to get fire ant killer and we went to the Walmart in the next town and they had already turned their lawn and garden center into their Christmas Store. Had just reopened a short time ago due to all the damage Hurricane Harvey did. Lowes is right acorss the street and I usually could easily get it there, but they were damage even worse and will not be open until the middle of next monrth. I had some Sevin Dust so I did put it out.
