Unhappy My dog just attacked my cat, help !

Hi everyone,
Sorry to join with a negative story, but at 3am Im not sure where else to go for help and advice.

In my profile pic you will see my bullmastiff, Kobi, approx 2yrs old and a desexed male rescue.
Also 2 of my 3 cats, coco and scuzz.
Kobi has been with me for 15 months now and usually is a faultless puppy, a rescue that was already trained but with no record of any background.
The cats have been with me since prior to the dog extending our family.

My grievance is that, tonight, Kobi attacked my cat scuzz, and i mean attacked. I had Kobi on his lead, took him into my back garden, the cat was sat on a 4ft wall with his tail hanging and Kobi grabbed him by it and threw him to the floor. It took me a few attempts at pulling on the lead and screaming at the dog to get him off the cat.

Kobi has been known to chase scuzz as this cat barely comes into the house any further than the stairgated bedroom (sectioned off for the cats and their food). He has also chased coco before now, although mostly ignores him as i get chance to train him to leave coco more often. My third cat and Kobi are best of friends.

My profile pic was taken during a time recently when i was trying to integrate scuzz more after having more control over Kobi wanting to chase coco. Kobi seemed fine and ignored the cat, apart from watching as a fussed scuzz.

The second i got Kobi off the cat, he ran away, i tied Kobi and went looking for scuzz, to no avail (even still, hence being up at 3am on here). I have no idea what damage he's done to scuzz, but i don't see any marks on Kobi from cat claws or teeth. It was dark out so i didn't see much and i don't recall hearing any noise off the cat.

Im traumatised and Im sure both animals involved are too.
The only reason i can think, apart from the obvious prey drive or territory defending, is that Kobi seems to get jealous on a regular basis, of people, children etc around me, even if Im on the phone ignoring him. Although he's always been far from aggressive, to any person or other dog, apart from one dog that attacked him once. Even the cats only seem to get chased and never hurt like this before. Kobi has walked past that same cat on that same wall many times and only ever seemed to jump up to the cat out of interest.

Sorry its long winded, but please help, Im not sure what to do now and my home is too small to completely divide them

You're probably not going to get any good answers until tomorrow because most are in bed but I'm west coast usa so it isn't so late here.
Hope you can find your cat unharmed. Until your dog is trained and since you don't have the room to divide them you may have to use a muzzle. That's all I can think of but others may have better suggestions

I found and caught the cat, he's been seen by a vet and his tail may be permanently damaged, and i need to keep an eye on him over the next few days as he's long haired and hard to spot any wounds, but he's medicated and seems ok.

I agree, i need to purchase a muzzle for now, that's my next stop now. My dad thinks the dog might have been tryin to play with the cat, but being so big he's caused this damage. He could be right.. But i now don't know how else to go about his training?
He knows the leave command but unless Im watching 24/7 i can't do that every time, he's not dominant as I've taken all steps possible and he's not an aggressive dog. I can only think he must have tried to play or he must have gotten jealous of the cat having fuss the other day.

How else can i try to integrate them better?

Hi Linzi So sorry this has happened to your cat. Muzzle for now and start training a good solid Leave It/Don't touch My Nipper too given half the chance to chase a cat,etc but I had tools in place as a pup she always known Leave it or don't touch but I thought How on earth I am going to stop this?? Ah the tools were already in place so armed with treats and my tools (commands) I cracked it she will see a cat now and either take no notice or go over and have a sniff at them (sort of greeting thme!) and all is good. So eventauly introduce
Kobi to Scuzz but from a safe distance on leash (at this stage!!) And make it fun for Kobi so when he complies to your command you treat and praise and I mean Praise Go OTT each and every time he complies with Leave it/Don't touch It won't happen over night so patience and consistancy is the order of the day And I call this command ( cause it's so useful) my life saver command Good luck and keep us informed as to any progress please

Hi Bigboy, thank you for your response.
Its been an experience for sure, i always thought id got the cat thing sorted and he'd only chase for the fun of it, as I've had him 15 months now and he's never done this before now.
I do use positive reinforcement, its the only way he works, true to his breed, the only problem i think i have is that he was 10-12 months old when i got him from the rescue and without knowing his background Im unsure of what's causing his actions with the cat, especially as he's best mates with my youngest cat that doesn't run from him.
Its tricky when your not sure what they've been through in the past but i know he clings to me, too much probably, and gets very jealous. Maybe giving the cats food first might have been a bad idea too, as he was underweight when i got him, so I've worked hard on his moderate food aggression since too.

Keep the ideas rolling in, every little helps eh :-)

It could have just been reflex, chasing and grabbing often can be, he could likely have hurt that catmore if he really wanted to.

However, this is where you have to bring in a trainer, you need to find what Kobi is reacting to, what REALLY is going on, accident, prey drive, aggression, jealousy etc and WORK it. If it is the later the cat may just be the first incident and it may escalate.

Where do you live?
Oh and welcome to the forum, sorry I didn't have a really good solution for you straight off the bat.. But I will tryto help to guide you to a good trainer in your area..
