Default Will a westie and a scottie get on ?

Hi everyone

I am new on here and fairly new to dogs not having had one for many years. I am certainly new to terriers ! I have a 6 month old westie Bella and recently acquired a new pal for her - a 15 week scottied dog Hamish. They seem to be settling down now (4 days so far)but reading up on scotties it seems they sometimes don't get on with other pets and Bella was pretty jealous at first and he can be quite agressive at times.

Has anyone ever had experience of keeping these breeds together ? any advice for training ?

Also should I get them both neutered (I don't want pups) or can i just get the bitch done.

Thank you in anticipation of your help and advice

Gaye

Hello and welcome to Dogforum.org.

I see no reason why they would not get along especially since they are both pups and are growing up together.

I would get them both spayed and nuetered, you can probably get your female done right away since she is 6 months old already and wait till the male is 6 months.

Do you have any piccies?

Thank you for your quick reply. I will try and work out how to attach a pic. For some reason I am a junior member - not sure how that happened and how I can change.

The vet advised I should wait until after her first season until I get Bella neutered - by which time Hamish will probably be old enough !!

Your " junior " status will go away after a few more posts and it will say " member" then after a few more it will change again.

There are lots of vets that say to wait till after a first season and lots that say not to. IF you are concerned about it you can nueter you male dog earlier but I would still spay your female at 6 months regardless of the first heat or not. My vet is one of the vets that says 6 months and I have always agreed with that. Why risk and unwanted pregnancy ? Makes no sense to me and females dog will still live long happy live spayed at six months.

Hi and welcome to the forum from me and my Gang. I agree they are both puppies so hopefullly should work things out for themselves and get on fine. I would say also have the bitch spayed. as regards the dog if you are having the bitch spayed it is not imperative to have the dog nuetered unless you really want to . As regards spayong Bella I would wait till she has had her first season and have her done about 9 weeks later of course you would have to be very vigelent with your boy till she is done. I personally don't believe in nuetering males unless their is a health reason to do so. My view on bitches is different in that I have had two bitches who took pyometra and so if I was over having another bitch I would get her nuetered after her first season as I have said, This is only my opinion and at the end of the day the decision is yours. Good luck whatever you decide.

Smile Gaye again

Hi again

Bella and Hamish are getting on much better now though she is still being a bit bossy. He has already shown signs of trying to mount her (he's 16 weeks and she is 7 months) and I've noticed her licking herself a lot recently which she didn't do before . So am off to the vet today to get Hamish checked out as he keeps itching his ears and get some advice. I doubt I would be able to keep them apart if she did come in to season as I live in an old cottage and have no doors downstairs !

They have the odd bad squabble still where Bella is quite nasty (over food) usually but I think we are getting there. Bella is very good with other dogs and has a fab temperament so am keeping my fingers crossed they keep getting on. If i'd read all the threads on here though about getting 2 young pups at same time I don't think I'd have done it !

He has calmed down a lot since I got him and growling only in play now so fingers crossed, 2 very different little characters though !

the playing and wrestling is what I see every day with my 2. Sasha is 13 Months, Sprockett just turned 15 weeks.

For the first couple of weeks I just kept a close eye on them. If Sasha or Sprockett got a little to "into" it. I would simply step in and place them both in a submissive position. ( put them into a Lay down position, and roll them onto one side or the other. Hold them for a 10 count and then let them up again) This is working out well for me. They usually go back to playing but not nearly as rough as they were previously.

I find this however this is doing 2 things, Telling them that I am alpha Male making sure that they both know their role in the pack order. Its also telling them at what level of play is acceptiable. Sometimes one or the other gets overly rough and I do the same thing but just to the offender not other. They are both catching on really quickly.

Hope this helps.

thank you for the advice i will try that next time. Bella gets very excited when she gets wet, which she did this morning after her walk, starts running round like a mad thing getting hamish to chase her, he starts barking and trying to catch and it gets more and more frantic and a couple of times nearly ended in tears. While it was cute when she was a singleton I have decided I am going to stop as soon as it gets too mad, didn't think about the lying down in submissive mode though, sounds a brilliant idea ! thanks

Will let you know how I get on. They actually managed to have a chew bone each this morning for over an hour without ending up fighting - I have been having to take them away after 10 minutes as each wants the other one after a few minutes - even though both are identical ! Hamish started barking at Bella after about half an hour so I stopped him and told him to leave and he went to his basket and let her carry on chewing ! He's either listening to me or being respectful to madam!
