Talking Help!

Hey guys, my name is Karleen and I’m 22 years old. About a year ago I found near my house a puppy who was malnourished, hurt and mostly very afraid. I fell in love with her instantly. My boyfriend and I bathed her for hours to remove all the ticks and fleas she had in her body, then we took her to the vet. That night I took her home with me and after a few days of having her in my house I realized that I never wanted to give her up. She is the sweetest dog you will ever meet. Sadly, she is also a very nervous dog. I assume her nervousness comes from the hardships she went through in the streets, she’s especially afraid of water and loud sounds.

How old is she now?
Does she flinch when you move quickly?
Did the vet say what breed she might be?
I assume she got her shots and checked for or dewormed.
Is she eating ok?

Welcome and good on you for the rescue!

Hi. A really good starting point for owners of fearful dogs is the easy to read booklet 'Cautious Canine' by Patricia McConnell. It explains the basics of counter conditioning and desensitisation, which can be applied to change the emotional response to anything your dog finds scary.

Sadly there is no quick fix for very fearful dogs, however, if you are prepared to work with the dog and you have the correct knowledge you can improve their quality of life considerably in most cases.

Welcome and good on you for the rescue!
I assume she's about a year old now.
Yes, she flinches and jumps every time she hears a loud sound. She gets startled very easily.
The vet said she's a golden retriever, he can't tell me for sure because she's from the streets but she certainly looks a lot like one.
She got her shots, dewormed and she's eating ok. She's very healthy and happy but she's terribly afraid of water (giving her baths is really hard, I've tried everything) and very nervous when she hears loud sounds.

this was her when we found her:

this is her now:

Welcome Karleen, and how wonderful of you to give this lovely dog a home! I can certainly see a ton of golden in her. What is her name?
