We were horse backriding and I had my two dogs and a friend had her lab with us. The dogs flushed out what looked like a mink or some kind of weasel like creature from the ditch. Jenna was the only one to see it and she went after it full bore and grab this thing by the back, well it screamed and whirled around and bit her on the lip and hung on. Needless to say Jenna yelped and let go of it but it hung on for a few seconds.
Poor Jenna. ![]() It started to run away and Jenna went back after it, it turned around and hissed at her and she finally backed off. I, at this time was off my horse and on the ground ( good thing my mare is use to me yelling for the dogs so she was OK with what was going on ). I got to Jenna and looked at her lip adn it was bleeding and sore but she was OK. She has had no ill effect and yes her Rabies shot is up to date. Talk about scary! |

take your dog to the vet... not knowing what the animal was or what disease it may be carrying i would definitely get the dog looked at. the infections that may arise could be of less concern if treated early...

My 11 year old golden, Buck loves to chase and catch squirrels and has killed a few. But one fiesty little female really nailed him hard on the lip. He had about 4 bites, the worst one right thru his lip. I thought he had killed her, as she was just laying on the ground. I got him in and went back to her and i could see she was really breathing hard--and could tell she was nursing babies. She laid there for about 5 minutes, then got up and ran up the tree. I saw no blood on her at all, so i do not think she was injured, just stressed and bushed.
I was very worried, but my vet said he didn't know of any cases of squirrels having rabies, and Buck was up to date on all shots. This happened last Spring.
