Question Dog has tattoo!

I've just taken on a rescue dog and found this tattoo in her groin. Does anyone know what it is?

Hi and welcome to Df And good on you for rescuing I would say it may be a identification mark of some kind! it looks like S25 or S23 Have you asked the shelter about this mark? What breed is she? Do you know the back ground to this rescue dog? What's her name? Enjoy the forum and ATB to both of you

Often times, that kind of tattoo, is what we call a vet's tattoo, it usually means that the dog has been spayed. It seems to be common in certain areas where there are a lot of shelter dogs. When the shelter was first doing a lot of transport dogs from the south, we would see this a lot. The transfer shelter explained that due to how some clinics were only tying off tubes on females, doing half spays, and not complete spays, it was just easier to identify a dog or cat as spayed. Some technicians cannot palpatate correctly, and it saves an animal from going under for surgery, only to discover that the animal had already been altered.

Thanks for your replies and the warm welcome

I've asked around on some other forums and had much the same response, that it might be a spay tattoo.

Now this is where it gets interesting - and why I've tried this forum where there are mopre members in the USA - in the country where I live (England) we don't do, and never have done, this! So she is most likely from overseas orginally, and I'd love to find out where.

The shelter picked her up as a stray in December - she wasn't chipped and is about 10-12 years old. She's a pure-bred Malinois and they are not very common in rescue in the UK, especially ones of her age. I've been in touch with the show breeders of malis in the UK (I am a Belgian Shepherd fan so I know quite a few of them) in fact it was one who spotted her in the shelter and got her out to a safe place then brought her down to me. The show breeders know every line & litter of Malis in the UK as only a couple of litters are born every year and they can confirm she is not UK-bred.... and of course nobody in the UK tattoos dogs in that way. The police and military tattoo in the ear ONLY and always have done.

I have a real mystery girl..... and don't you just wish sometimes they could talk!

I own a Borzoi imported from Russia. He has a similar tattoo and also in his ears.

My racing Greyhounds's ears are also marked.

She has no tats in her ears - just the green one on the inside of the leg flap. It's either S23 or 523.
Does your Borzoi have a similar 3-digit tattoo?

I guess it may mean she's not spayed after all, but I suppose I'll find out within the next few months...lol
