Default The growl vs the grumble

Does anyone else's dog grumble?

Zircon will make a noise like a creaky door sometimes which I think is an expression of mild annoyance. I think if I were to translate it, it would be "do you mind?" For example if I move him to make room for myself on the couch. It's not a growl so I don't see it as a danger sign, it's more like he is simply unhappy at being shoved around.

Sophia by the way never makes a grumbling noise, but she will growl at inappropriate times. It's as if she doesn't understand that a doggy growl means 'bug off' but is her say of saying "I'm SOOOOO happy!" Maybe since she wasn't socialized she never learned doggyspeak?

Oh yes, we definitely get grumbly around here sometimes. We also get huffy and those great big sighing sounds.

It's so funny and doesn't take much effort on my part to figure out what the attitude is all about.

Mya grumbles quite emphatically when Hubby moves her. It's absolutely hilarious!

Ashenpaw will occasionally chat with a series of low grumbles and whines. For him it's just part of his extensive vocab. The funniest one he does it a low to high pitched growl/howl. Rather rumbly and cute!

Parker grumbles when he flops down on the floor... there's a *thud* *arrrooommmmm* It's hard not to laugh when he does this!

When Mya and Ash are not pleased with a dog's manner towards them there is a distinctive and very clear 'bug off' growl. Parker likes everyone, so I've never heard him actually growl.

Simba is a very grumbly dog, but then I think collies are one of the more vocal breeds in general anyway, my last one was too.

I can definitely distinguish between a grumble and a growl, but it is quite disconcerting if you don't know her.

She likes to huff and sigh and groan and whimper and sing and 'woo woo wooooo' a lot, all reasons why she's so 'unique'.

Molly and Shabba never grumble though, it's rather odd. They do groan and sigh, but i've never heard either of them grumble at anyone.

I'am chillin' with forum thanks Bigboy and Sheplovr!

Greta and all my other shorthairs make a rumbling sound just like a growl when they're very, very happy. Greta does it the whole time I'm brushing her while she's leaning back on me and turning her body so I can get to the spots she likes brushed the most. You can even feel it like a cat's purr. Scares the beejeebers out of anyone that doesn't know this.

One day I met a woman at a dog show who was thinking of getting a shorthair. I invited her over to talk dogs and meet the rest of my guys and gals.

She'd fallen in love with Tori at the show and once she'd met them all, she invited Tori up on the sofa with her. Of course he was in doggie heaven and his rumblings could be heard clear across the room. She froze and I heard this tiny whisper stammering, "he he he he's growling at me". I made him get down and It took me awhile to convince her that he wasn't going to attack her unless it was with kisses. By the end of her visit she was a believer and Tori was back on the couch with his head in her lap.

Mine would also make noises similar to Zircon when told to get off the couch. Quite often they'd flop onto the floor with a deep sigh as if to say; I did what you asked and here I am with nothing but the cold hard floor, are you happy now?

A well trained dog will make no attempt to share your lunch.

He'll just make you feel guilty while you're eating it.

Oh yes, I have one that grumbles when he is sleepy. Sometimes he just grumbles to himself when no other dogs or people are near him, lol. He thinks he has a hard life!

Charley is a grunter. A happy grunter. He grunts when he gets belly rubs, when he has the privilege of cuddling with us, when he gets a good stretch...the growls are reserved for anyone with the audacity to walk by our house.

Honey will grumble when she gets excited, I think its great, Punch use to grumble a whole lot to, one of my best memories of him is walking into his kennel with one of the other workers, and saying to him 'say hello Punch', and I swear his grumble then actually sounded like Hello lol.
thanks for the sigpic Fede.

Yes we've got one of those as well, grumbles, moans, chunters or sighs to herself when she doesn't get what she wants, but the sulk is her best she may not make a sound, but the silence is deafening.
