Default When do dogs go grey?

I was looking at Sophia's face yesterday evening and I've come to the conclusion that at the age of 6 years, she is starting to look like an old dog. I swear her muzzle is whiter than it was, and she has white around her eyes. Is this a normal age for dogs to 'go grey,' is she aging quickly, or is she possibly older than we think?

As far as I know there are a lot of variables to that question. I once saw a 4 y/o border collie that was grey. I can't remember with April. Sooty has been gradually going grey over the last couple of years. She's 8 y/o. And I saw my cousin's 13 y/o little dog last week & she's hardly grey.

I agree with April, it varies . I Had a five year old borzoi who was mohoganay with white and had a black muzzle and the muzzle started going grey at around 5 years old so I have come to the conslusion that darker muzzled dogs go grey qucker. At present Rye is five but he has a light coloured muzzle and I can see no difference in him .

Or as you say it may be that she is older than you think.

Lucy had a little bit of gray on her muzzle when she was 5. Now she is getting white around her eyes too!(10) But what can I say? I got my first white hairs at 19! And I quit dying my hair at 50! Too much trouble when you are going from brown-black to white. Luckily my hair is a pure white where and slalt and pepper where it isn't white!

Coco was very grey around her muzzle when she was 10 months old. By 2 years - she looked just about as she does now. Now she looks a lot like some other 10 year old dogs in terms of amounts of grey (she's 4 years old). Macey who is 5 has less grey than Coco does.

At just turned six Kofi is showing some grey around his muzzle. I think this is pretty normal.

I've met dogs who never turned grey, a 14 year old black Lab and not a grey hair on her! I was so surprised, I had thought she was a young dog as she hadn't any grey and was so lean and fit. Now Drifter got grey hairs when he was 4 and now they've traveled up along his muzzle, around his eyes, on his ears and the top of his head. Every week I see him he has more and more grey.

My opinion is like people dogs vary on when they get grey/if they ever get grey.

Just like people, it's related to genes. Aslan started turning grey at the muzzle at 6. My other dogs didn't turn grey until their teens. I've seen Goldens turn grey very young and others who never turned. All genetic with perhaps a small amount of environment.
