Default Owning 2 females

Eventually, I plan on getting a second dog. My dog is a female and I'd like another female. However, I have heard that 2 females will not get along. Is this true? A few people have said that 2 girls will get along fine, but others have told me that I'd better get a male as a second dog (which I truly don't want). Could it be that the 2 particular dogs just may not get along and it has nothing to do with them both being female?
If anyone has any horror stories about owning 2 females, tell me about it.
Thanx!

how come you don't want a male? as long as its fixed, little boys can be so loving i think. but usually males tend to do their own thing. but then again it depends on the breed.

Im in the same situation as you. I own a 2yr old female staffy. I want a female golden retriever. I have been warned by some that females staffys dont get along (which i agree with as sasha hates them when we meet them on walks) but a few dog owners I know say a Golden female would be ok. My mums nxt door neighbour owns a female 6month old golden retriever x lab and she gets on fine with her.

Hi...I own a Staffy and an Aussie Bulldog both female and they never go any where without each other !!!.I must also add that I had the staffy first and she was well socialized with other dogs ,So I knew before hand that she would get along with another dog coming into the house hold.

If your dog has issues with other dogs it might not be such a good idea to add another one to the family !!.

I should also add they are both spayed !!!.

really? my friend had 2 females and they hated each other one was a staffy from a bad home that she rescued her from and the other a lab x lurcher and they really didn't get along so she gave the staffy to her grandad and she is now living the life of luxury but is still really funny around other dogs? and the lab x lurcher is as soft and as doppy as anything when my kids were growing up they would lay on her crawl all over her.

personally I say it depends on the dog not the breed. I own a basset hound who is very aggressive to female dogs. She hates them. I know two people that have two female pitbulls that get along fine. Sit down think about it long and hard. How old is your dog. If she is a puppy then it may be ok to bring another home. Is she ever aggressive with female dogs or dogs in general? If not then it should be ok. If so are you really willing to take the chance of her hurting or even killing a brand new puppy. Every dog is different and I'm sure your dog adores you. This would also be a bad reason to get another female if your dog was jealous of you. I honestly wouldn't recommend it being as I have a female on female agressive dog who nearly killed a puppy of mine once when they seemed ok and I left them alone just for a few minutes. Dogs have a pack instinct, sometimes the dominant female will fight the other and establish she is dominant and then no more fighting, but if that one becomes dominant she has the right in her mind to fight the other anytime she pleases. Its just natural. But I'll add one more thing. If she can learn to get along with a puppy being as it is not sexually mature and she would not view her as trying to steal her position yet then maybe they would be ok when the puppy got older. But still I'd think about it first. Maybe get a friends puppy or something and bring it home just to see how she is around her.

I agree. It depends on the dog. With Zoe, it's not about the sex of the dog, but whether they have a good personality and not alpha. She loves this huge golden named Sally but hates any little dogs, male or female. Shes also friends with a male pitty, male st bernard and female boxer. But hates the female lab next door and the female pitty/shepherd in the backyard behind us.
