Default What does "Heart Dog" mean to you?

Someone made a comment about one of their dogs that had gone to the Bridge as a "heart dog." So I wanted to know what makes a dog a "heart dog?" I found a blog on the internet that said this:
Quote:
Heart dogs do not come along every day as any dog person will tell you. I have been fortunate to have had two - Dina was my first. I never thought I would have another one. Most people are lucky to have just one in their entire lifetime. A heart dog makes you think you could never own another dog because your heart will break when you loose them. A heart dog has an inexplicable connection to you - and you alone.

Does everyone have a heart dog? How do you know if you have one? Is there any way to put it into words, or do you just know?

i know Belle is my heart dog, and Gideon might be one. Belle she just makes you love her, and when she goes to the bridge it will break my heart. She was my first dog, and my best friend, and even this makes me cry!

When I had to take Brita the bulldog to be PTS, I thought it was end. Each and every dog has a special place with me as I care for them, feed them, they are my shadows, so all are heart dogs. I am an old softie when it comes to dogs. Even loosing a bird I cry.

Is odd, but we were talking about this in work last week. Someone asked me if there was anything I regreted about rescuing Moll. I can honestly say that the only thing I regret is the thought of losing her. I cannot even begin to think about it. She has brought so much life into the house, there is never a dull moment. I love her to bits.

That's how I feel about Zircon. There has not been a day when he has not made me laugh, and I could not have asked for a better dogs, at least for me. It makes me feel guilty a little about Sophia-she is a very sweet dog, but she is not my "heart" dog. I hoenstly hope that she can't feel that!

I have loved each of my dogs. Wahoo was my heart dog. The bond with him was extra special. Losing him was grief beyond words. I'd say the description you found truly does fit. Wahoo was my sweet buddy and I will miss him every day for the rest of my life. I hope I am lucky enough to find another heart dog, maybe in Ingot. It's kind of like finding your canine soulmate...

I've had some wonderful dogs in my lifetime and would wish any one of them back in a heartbeat. But I've been fortunate enough to have two heart dogs.

With both of them we were completely tuned into each other but yet they weren't overly clingy or totally dependent on me for their contentment.

They seemed to instinctively know when it was time to try my patience and provide a challenge, do something silly to make me laugh or when I needed comforting.

There is a downside to having such a fulfilling relationship with a dog. One has been gone from my life for 20 years and the other has been gone for 4 years. And it's impossible to imagine that any other dog could ever come up to their standards.

Of course I keep reminding myself that I didn't even want the dog that turned out to be my second heart dog and was determined not to keep him! Keeping him turned out to be one of the best and smartest things I ever did!

Simba and Kiara are my heartdogs. There is just an unconditional love and bond that I could never have with another dog.
