![]() Hello, I am new to this site. My parents have a 13 year old lab. Chance has been panting a lot for the past few months real bad. The only time he does not pant is when he lays on his side. But other then that, he pants all the time. I am trying to find out what would cause this panting. My dad took him to the vet and they did an e-ray of his chest and there were no problems there. Now Chance has bad hips and arth. real bad. It is hard for him to get up and down. Remember he is 13 years old. But my dad is trying to figure out what is causing this panting. The vet did give him some meds. for the pain from the arth. and his hips. Chance has been on those for about two months and still no change in the panting.
Any advice would be appreciated. Krista |

![]() Todd pants when he's in pain, which probably isn't what you want to hear. Obviously he pants when he's hot too, but inside the house the other dog will be fine and he'll pant non stop, at this point we can always tell if he's in pain or not feeling too good.
Have you asked your vet about the panting?

![]() yes they have asked the vet about the panting. And that is why I guess he is on the meds. to help with the arth. he has and the pain. But would that really cause the non stop panting that Chance does? I know the dog is old, he will be 14 this December. And I know my dad had mention it is now getting to point of will this be the day.

![]() Dogs will also pant if they are anxious or stressed. The meds might be making him feel 'off' or anxious.

![]() Hi Krista
So sorry to hear about Chance panting. It sounds like it could be all of the above-age, heat, stress, pain. I think about all you can do is make him cool and comfortable. I wish you and Chance the very best. ![]()

![]() What is a twisted bowl? See Chance is my parents dog but still part of the family. I know I just spoke with my mother tonight and the vet thought it my be his hips that is causing him so much pain. They did blood work on him but I am not sure if anything came back on it yet or not.
I do know the doctor gave them some meds for the pain but he is still panting a lot. I really appreciate all this advice. Like I said this dog is like a family member to us. And when they are doing something that you don't understand you get upset because you do not know how to help them. Krista |

![]() Twisted bowel is a twisted intestine. I don't know if that's the cause but was just answering your question.
