I have modified the scoring system, slightly, to expand on the inclusion of glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, and MSM in kibble. I have also added more information about probiotics and prebiotics, breaking out prebiotics in the process.

After someone accused me of personally recommending a dogfood that their dog did not tolerate, I have altered the scoring terms. Just because a food is made with higher-quality ingredients does not guarantee that every dog will tolerate it or like it. I built this grading system using the best information available to help YOU evaluate the food YOU are choosing to feed your dog. Neither I, nor DogForum.org are endorsing or recommending a particular brand of food for your dog. What you feed your dog is your decision.

Updated to move probiotics from the list of ingredients that improve a kibble, to the list of ingredients that distract from a kibble.

Updated to revise the penalty for the use of menadione to reflect long-term low-level effects. Updated grades to replace "Not Recommended" with "Well Below Average" and added a new, lower grade for truly unacceptable foods.

Added a 2-point deduction for potato protein as a main ingredient.

In post #1, I have added a 20-point deduction, if specific meat or specific meat meal is present, but only as a secondary ingredient. As a secondary ingredient, it can only be there for flavor or marketing, not nutrition. If they can add it for flavor, they can make it a quality main ingredient for nutrition.

In post #2, I have expanded the deduction for corn as a first ingredient to include any grain as a first ingredient. As the price of corn rises, we are seeing other grains begin to replace corn and appear as the first ingredient.

In post #4, I have expanded the point addition for the combination of specific meat and meat meal as main ingredients, to include the combination of a specific meat meal as the first ingredient and one or more other specific meat meals as main ingredients. The point is that specific meat protein be the main source of protein in the food. When multiple meats and meat meals are listed as main ingredients, we can be sure that meat is the main source of protein in the food.

Existing scores will be adjusted, where necessary, as scores are updated and new scores are added.
