Default Bird seed

Birdseed bad for dogs? I found the dog today under the birdfeeder eating seeds and peanuts. I spilled a lot of it yesterday and tried to clean up what I could. I've had the birdfeeder out for about a month now and have not seen this behavior until today. Advice anyone?

I would say it depends on what's in the bird-seed.

If there are hard seeds with sharp-edges then that MIGHT be cause for alarm, but then again it could be inconsequential.

If there are indeed peanuts in the bird-seed mix that would be the most dangerous thing. Peanuts are very fatty and dogs can develop liver problems. In fact, as I type "liver problems" I'm not entirely sure if it's liver or kidneys. It's midnight here so I'm allowed to mix up the organs.

Generally, those kinds of problems require chronic over-saturation of fats in the dog's diet.

I think the best advice I can give is to just watch their #2's. If everything seems normal for 3-4 days then you are in the clear. If you see blood then their might be a problem keeping in mind that a little blood in the stool isn't necessarily uncommon.

I swear I've talked about poop in some way shape or form about 3-4 times today...

Surprised me, but according to these articles and one by the aspca, it isn't harmful in small amounts.

Birds are such messy eaters that there is always lots of black oil sunflower seeds on the ground under the feeders. Some of my dogs do like to eat them but they do not have a lot of access to them as they are in a part of the yard that is fenced off from them. So far, it has never bothered them but I do try and keep them away from them.

Thanks everyone - I am going to change the seed in the backyard. (no peanuts - I think only the Cardinals eat peanuts?) He had not touched the seed until I dropped quite a bit two days ago.

I had a feeling he would be okay as long as he's not eating it in large quantities, but I am going to read JGLI's links. If I need to the feeder will be relocated to the front yard where he doesn't have access.

Thanks again, Robin and Jake the K9
