Default Dog's not eating well

this is our first dog so I hope you forgive my ignorance.

Our dog is 9 mo, and otherwise healthy (saw the vet today). when we got him (at 4 mo) the breeder said to feed him once/day but the vet and trainer we were working with said twice. so we fed him twice daily. most always he would eat most of the food we gave him and then walk away from the bowl. and that was fine.

but now, he sniffs at his morning bowl of food and is completely disinterested in eating. I tried feeding him a bit later in the day, but no go.
come dinner time, he sniffs and walks away but if I bring him to the food and stay there with him for a while he will eventually eat most of it.

we have not changed the type of food we are giving him. this has been going on for a week or so. I mentioned it to the vet today (he went for something unrelated) and the vet didnt seem too concerned. I meant to ask if perhaps I should feed him only once daily but I forgot. so, what do you all think?

he's a spanish waterdog, and weighs 41 lb, if that matters.

Is he drinking?
He will eat when he is hungry. Put the food down for 20 minutes and pick back up at the end of the time if he hasn't eaten. As long as he is drinking water okay. I wouldn't worry for a few days. If after that time he still isn't eating I would give the vet a call. There might be something else going on with him.

Hi amigo It also depends on the amount of excercise he is getting. Say for Eg: he wasn't getting any then he won't be as hungry as he might be.

This really is a friendly forum. I have been a part of some that most definitely were not. And there are some very knowledgeable experts giving good advice.

If he never finishes what you put down then you are feeding too much. You should be able to feel his ribs and see a waist (Depending on the amount of fur). The dog food sacks all say to feed too much.
What kind of dog or what is his weight?

Your dog could just be eating what it needs. There are some dogs who will over eat and others who will just eat what they need.

It could just be too much food for him.

If he's a healthy weight/body condition and acting fine, I don't think it should be too concerning.

On a side note-Is he getting any "snacks" or being feed any type of human food? Those could be filling him up so he doesn't want to eat his kibble and he could also be going towards that rather then his actual food. He could he holding out for that.

A healthy dog won't starve itself.

(Also I looked it up and the adult weight for male Spanish water dogs is between 18-22kg)

thanks everyone. I wasnt nervous about the forum, just about my dog's not eating! so far I've only gotten friendly replies here : )

we don't give him any food from the table, I've put the fear of that into my kids lest they give him chocolate or walnuts or anything else thats really bad for him. he gets a *tiny* bit of chicken here and there when we are teaching him new tricks, but not enough to really fill him up. and its nothing regular that he would 'wait for'.

he's got a thick, fluffy coat so I can't see any waist, and I dont really feel ribs either. the vet didnt mention that he's getting fat, but I didnt specifically ask.

he's never been a 'love to eat all day' kind of dog, usually does leave a bit in his bowl, but the skipping one meal completely is new.

today he skipped his morning meal but instead of leaving it out I got rid of it. then he ate his full evening meal within two minutes.
so I've probably been overfeeding him.
does it make any sense to feed a dog only once/day? that's what the breeder recommended but it just doesnt feel right to me. of course I have zero experience...
or should I just feed him less, twice daily?

his activity level does vary from day to day (when the kids are around and the weather is nice he gets much more activity) so maybe that is coming into play more than I realized.

I feed my dog once a day. But I know most people prefer to feed thier dogs twice a day. If you feed him twice a day, just give him a certain amount. Divide how much he is getting daily into two abd give each half for each meal, does that make sense?
