The top selling dry dog food in the US are:
  • Pedigree - Pedigree with Chicken, Rice and Vegetables Dry Dog Food
  • Iams - Iams Premium Protection Dry Dog Food
  • Ol' Roy - Ol' Roy Complete Nutrition Dog Food
  • Kibbles 'n Bits - Kibbles 'N Bits Original Chicken and Beef Flavor
  • Purina - Purina Dog Chow
These are not necessarily the best or most nutritional but at a minimum it does keep a dog from starving. I really would like to know what harm is done, any studies out there? I feed my dogs and fosters grain free, California Natural and TOTW. In placing my fosters, we do ask the type of food that is fed but don't pass if they've feed their past dogs Purina One. We do attempt to educate on better nutritional choices but know the adopter can change dog food any time. If these foods do cause harm, then food choice needs to be part of our selection criteria.

DanesForever, wow... I had no idea that these brands would be top brands sold in the US. Poor nutrition can cause a multiple of problems in dogs and cats. None of the kibble listed above, rates as a good food. Ol' Roy is made in China. Not sure I'd trust feeding my dog that at all. I think I'll stick with vagreys kibble rating thread.. I use Blue Buffalo grain free.

Don't forget Vagreys' ratings here either. I think they are pretty good too.

One of the reasons that they all end up in the top seller list is because they are so full of fillers that the dogs eat them in massive quantities trying to get enough nutrition out of them.

The more the dog eats by volume, the more often the owner has to buy more dog food.

The better the quality of the dog food, the less of it the dog needs to stay healthy, therefore the lower the quantity per year that is bought by the owner.

Kenxzie'sMom, well said, and very true. Look what happened to me when I switched. All my dogs GAINED weight. So yes, the food I buy is expensive, but I use much less.
