Default Thinking about switching to Nutro Ultra Hollistic

My dog starting having seizures last year, was up to 90lbs and starting looking like a 'sausage' dog. (Rottie mix) The Vet suggested I keep him on dog food under 24% protein and started him on Potassium Bromide. He was eating Natural Balance, but I changed him to Wellness Health Weight Mix. Good news is he has lost 12 lbs, maintaining his weight plus no seizures since then. The Wellness is $50 for a 26 lb bag. I am considering changing to a Nutro Lite brand as it's about 17% protein and $10-$20 less depending on the line. Does anyone out there buy it and what do you think?? Appreciate any responses.

Maybe Vagreys will see this and can comment. You can search for his analysis tread too. Maybe that will help.

Default Nutro Hollistic

Thank you Techie, I have sent him/her a message. The Wellness is really hurting my bank account, but I will stick with it if necessary.

Wellness is a much better product than Nutro. You could give the Nutro a try and if issues arise switch back. I'm feeding Orijen right now, lots of $$ but my dogs are doing great on it. I do switch protien source (fish, beef, turkey) but we stay with Orijen for the most part.

I felt it was a better product as well, but the price is killing me. You use Orijen? Not heard of it, but I will research. Thanks for the info. Robin

I know Nature's Recipe Original Adult formula is low protein and inexpensive.
We are feeding our dogs the Easy to Digest Chicken (too high a protein for you). It was a huge step up from the Beneful my boyfriend fed before we met but not as fancy as some of the others listed here.

Orijen is the best there is but it is more expensive than Wellness. Nutro is a horrible food. There are many foods better than Nutro for about the same or less money. Wellness is about the same price as Nutro Ultra and is a much better food. Others in the same price range and much better than Nutro are: Blue Buffalo, Castor & Pollux, Merrick, Taste of the Wild, Solid Gold, Canidae, Pinnacle and Dogswell. Nutro uses menadione, a synthetic form of Vitamin K. They use corn gluten meal, wheat and soy.

I will look at Blue Buffalo and Canidae. I've not heard of the others. I could also consider sticking with Wellness and changing to another line if it's a less $. I think the BB might be too high in protein, but I'll check.

Also it appears the 'lite' versions are lower in protein.

The only Blue Buffalo line that may be too high in protein is their Wilderness line. It is made for performance/working dogs. Their other lines are no higher in protein than any other brand.
