Default Food that won't cause diarrhea

hi all,

starting 2 months ago or so my dog (german shepherd) started having diarrhea. Took her to the vet and he put her on a science diet kibble. That fixed the problem and she also started to lose some weight (which is a good thing, she needed to lose some pounds). but she REALLY doesn't like it. Even when i mix in some of her canned food she basically tries to eat as much of the canned without eating the kibble. And she's obviously hungry. As soon as I mix in a little bit of the solid gold kibble, she immediately eats it.

I was feeding her solid gold wolf king. I tried giving her solid gold holistic blend, but she started getting diarrhea again from that too. I dont understand why all of a sudden she'd start getting diarrhea from the solid gold food. She's been eating that since I had her as a puppy, with no ill effects.

I'd prefer to get her off the science diet food since i'm not impressed at all with the ingredients list, even if she's not having diarrhea. I tried mixing in some pumpkin with the solid gold and had mixed results. I'd probably have to feed her two cans a day to maybe see any benefit.

Could anyone recommend any other good brand of food that is less likely to cause diarrhea? Or anything else i could mix in with the solid gold?

Anyhow, thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I had some intermittant loose stools issues with Ash on Solid Gold, I recently switched to Canidae grain free Salmon formula and thus far been impressed. He doesn't need to eat much because he gets soo much from the food. You need not use the same formula, as I understand it they are all good. Ash eats roughly 2 cups a day, Parker my rough collie is now transitioned to it too and he eats the same. Both are holding weight well, and have good stools.

Whatever food you end up with... feed to condition. If your dog is gaining (or over) cut back a bit and bring them down to a healthy weight. If they are loosing from the healthy weight, add a little more. If the stool is loose it could be due to overfeeding (I learned that recently!) Dogs caloric needs vary even from day to day. But if you watch for the signs it's not too hard to keep them in check.

hmm, looks like that food has an even higher calorie count then the solid gold wolf king. I guess i could try the overweight version which has a lower calorie count. I'll stop off at petco tomorrow and see if i can pick up a small bag and see what she thinks. Or i would but seems like petco doesn't carry it.

You could try Pedigree Vitality or even Wainwrights is your dog adult age yet Eg: > 12 months as it's best to switch to adult food around 12 months or slightly older. Note: When switching to a different brand always make the switch over a small period time (about 1 week) by gradualy increasing the new food and lowering the amount on the old food this should stop further tummy upsets. Good luck

Correct me if i am wrong, but i didn't think pedigree was a particularly good brand of food. Is wainwright sold in the US? never heard of it before and i just did a quick search and it looks like it's a company in the UK selling it. The shipping costs would kill me

I was thinking of getting her a better quality food, and then maybe just giving her a little less, and mixing in some brown rice or something so that she gets enough to eat but can still drop a little weight.

She's already lost some weight, still needs to loose a little more. She's not morbidly obese or anything. She probably needs to loose another 5 pounds.

Oh and yes she's an adult - she's 2+ now.

Hi Yes I thought Pedigree was a good brand maybe it isn't? I need the link to dog food analyis so I can check! Can any one post it on here or FAQ Wainwrights is a Uk company So shipping would out weigh the benifits. We have had some good discussions on dog Kibble

I completly agree with this statement.

the rule of thumb seems to be that all the major popular brands, at least in the US, are garbage. I haven't checked them all - but it seems like all the ones you'd see advertised on tv are the ones with the worst ratings.

Right now as soon as someone mentions a major brand, my first assumption is it's crap

You aren't wrong there! Bakers is another offender (shown on Tv) why isn't there a watchdog looking after our pets interests? And if there is rules on manufacturing dog food must be tightened to protect our pets.
