Default Sheena's first flyball tournament

2 pictures at the bottom.
I am awake but OOHHHHH so tired and sore. lol This has been an exhausting weekend. Anyway here are the details you have all been waiting for. We left on Friday afternoon after the kids were picked up. The tournament was in Calgary. We set up our camp and relaxed till Saturday. We watched other teams arrive and just had a quiet evening. We went to bed early. I ended up waking up at about 6am. The races didn't start till 8am. But we wanted to be there by about 7:30 to set up our crates and stuff. Sheena and Luca were full of excitement at seeing all the dogs. After feeding the dogs, I wanted to give Sheena a good 2 hours to digest before she raced,, We got ready and left for the building. We got there and the areana was already filling up. We set up the crate and waited. This sport is a ton of Hurry Up and sit and wait. There were a ton of teams there. And many many breeds of dogs, Of course the boarder collies and Jacks but some of the otehrs were belgiums, poodles, Icelandic Sheep dog, staffys, APBT's, labs, retrievers, pointers, whippets, and many more. There were two black and tan GSD's there but Sheena was the only WGSD. And I think she did a fabulous job reprsenting her breed.

Our team was not racing till the first race. And all they wanted Sheena to do in that race was the warm ups at the beginning. So she did a recall(the box loader holds her while I run down beside the jumps and then he lets ehr go to chase me down the run way over the jumps) and a Down and Back(this is where the box loader puts a ball in hte box and I send her down like she was racing but this is only practice and not racing). She did wonderfully. Not once looking anywhere. Me on the other hand was shaking like a leaf before and after. You don't have time to do anything but think about the dog in front of you and your dog. You don't notice the crowd or the other team when the racing is going on. My husband was the box loader all weekend for our team so that made it a little easier for Sheena and I.

The second race they decided to have Sheena run one of the 3 races in the heat, We ran in the first one. And agian Sheena did as she was suppose to. Not paying hte least bit of atention to anyone but me. Many people were impressed that she was doing so well her first day.

The next race she ran the first two races of that heat. Agian doing very well. She raced a total of 10 times on Saturday. All she did great except for the last race where she skipped the last jump because she was paying attention to something else. So they stopped her from racing the rest of the day. Which meant she only missed one race. That is when our team leader told me Sheena had gotten her FD AND her FDX. Two titles in one day and on her very first day at that. She also told us Sheena had gotten a total of 140 points that one day.

The next day we got up early agian to pack up the trailer before we had to be at the races. OUr first race was number 8. When we got there we found out one of the dogs on our team had pulled a muscle. So he couldn't run. Which ment Sheena had to run every heat our team was in, and 2 races each heat. She did run one heat where she ran all three races. She did great the whole time. Not once messing up even on the last race. She was slowing down a little by the last couple of races but so were all the other dogs. We ended the last day of the tournament With Sheena running great in her last heat. I don't know what her points were for the second day yet. Or what her fastest time was. But as soon as I do I will post them. If you want to see pictures go to my website, click on activites and go to my flyball page. I have pictures already posted there.

It was great. I won't go into the details of how hard it was for me. I had many embarassing moments that I am just not interested in going into. But I am proud to say that even though it was a lot harder for me to handle then I thought, I did do it. And Sheena had a blast and still did her job. Amazing people when they would see her doing her PSD work. One lady told me Sheena had it harder then most of the other dogs there because her first job was me, the rest was just a close second. Another lady also told me about a lady in the States who is a FLyball Judge and also has a PSD. I would love to meet her and find out what she does to cope with all of it.

Everywhere I went people were complimenting me on Sheena. They loved her look, build, temperment, everything. And I of course soaked it up. lol. Anyway I have a whole lot to do today with unpacking and such. Just wanted to give you an idea of how it went.

I know it is long. But so much happened. I tried to keep it as short as possible. Thanks. Those are my favorite two pics. Both were taken by a proffesional photographer that was there. I have more shots on my web site.

Congratulations to you both! It is fun and nerve wracking of at once.
I remmber the din of the excited dogs barking in the indoor arenas.
We competed for two years with one dog, then one year with another but we found the sport hard on their joints and the tennis balls wore their teeth quickly. We retired both and they are doing well in agility and Rally Obedience. Both have awesome joints for 10 & 11.55 yo dogs. We are glad we particicpated in flyball, but also glad we stopped when we did. The local club got way too carried away and became very competitive which killed it for us too.
Enjoy!
