Default Tips for Flyball

Hi all

Jake is starting flyball tomorrow night. There is just one problem - he can't resist cracking the tennis ball in his mouth - he has to puncture it!

We've changed over to the solid rubber balls and he's no problem with that - but he won't be very popular at flyball if he punctures the ball everytime!

Anyone been through this - any tips?

(Don't know if his first year as a gun dog have anything to do with it - but I would imagine he'd have had to have a soft mouth with the birds - ?)

Actually this is normal and expected of hte dogs when they first are learning. But once they really get into it they will only have time to carry it before they drop it at your feet for their traget toy. A target toy is a toy they love way more then a ball. For Sheena it is a kong on a rope. After they run teh jumps, hit the box to get the ball and turn around to return to you, you whip out the traget toy. This causes them to speed up to get to you and as they get close to you they drop the ball and usually launch themselves at teh target toy and grab that. It is best that the target toy is long or on a rope to save your fingers. lol Have fun.

Here is my favorite photo of Sheena getting ready to run our homemade course at home. Can you tell home much she loves this sport?

Thanks Nicole
Oh wow she sure looks like she's ready for fun. Thanks for that information about a target toy. Jakes has a small squeaky cow that he loves - I can easily put that on a rope.
This is where we are going:-

Well we did it - and Jake was great. He had a few instances of going around the jumps instead of over - but he loved it; especially the socialisation afterward.
He didn't 'crack' the tennis ball either -
He'll never be as speedy as the border collies (oh what beauts) as he's a gun dog and he lollops - but the reason i'm taking him is to get him to meet other dogs and have some fun.
One of the 'experts' said his front legs are bowed and that indicates that he had a bad diet as a puppy - ahhhhhhh!! He's 14 months now and we're building him up as he was malnurished.
Thanks for the tip about the favourite toy - i took his squeaky cow but he didn't need it - LOL
I'll try and post a picture of him in the starting blocks!
