Default First day out skijoring.

The weather finally warmed up to -5. So I figured I would introduce Calla to skijoring. I used to do this with Coda every winter and she loved it. Calla started off a little slow. Took her a bit to figure out the whole pulling thing, but 10 min in it all clicked. Need to get a better harness. I only have the ruffware one and I know she will do better with a guard or short harness.
I was wondering if anyone has tried one from canadog. Just wondering about the fit and material.

Can't wait to get her back out next weekend. I've also signed up for a workshop next month, should be fun.

Saw an interesting picture of a team of Dobermans pulling a sled. If I was younger I would try Kris with the skijoring. Sometime this month they have the sled dog races near where I am and it also includes the skijoring but no Dobermans.

Just looked it up and the Sled Dog Races are coming up next weekend. They run the races around the two Lakes, one of which I can see from my front deck. I will probably go over to watch from where they start. They usually have a big turnout with teams coming from all over. Video is not to clear as taken with my old camera.

I have some great pictures of a doberman team that cleans up in Russia. Dobes do well at skijoring because they love to run. When I get out to BC at the end of the month to see my brother and ski. We usually race his dogs around whistler to tire them out. Lol they don't understand why we want to spend the day on the hill when we could be out with them. They know the difference in equipment.

The best skijor harnesses are ones that fasten the lead closer to the dog's hips instead of his neck. I have a nice padded one I got from Ultra-paws which is a mail order company in Minnesota.
The harness for the skier is best if it has straps that go from the back to the front to fasten on the belt, similar to a climbing harness. Then it won't ride up on your hips.
When we go out I have Frodo follow my husband so he has some direction and something to focus on. We go out into open fields because I'm not sure how he will handle the distraction of other dogs and people on trails.
We have been working on commands in the backyard with him fastened to a sled and he is starting to understand that we're not supposed to stop and investigate other stuff in the bushes or trees while we're skiing.
I also have a weird looking trike so we can practice on dry land and my son skateboards with him sometimes.

The only 'problem' with this sport I can see is that you need snow

Oh yeah, we got snow. At this point unless you have the kind of backcountry skis with metal edges, it's almost too much. We got 18" between Saturday night and this morning. School is called off for 2 days due to extreme cold and blowing snow.
