Try a couple of things. You can bait a plate at the end of the weave poles. Have someone standing by it who can put their foot over it if she leaves the channel to go get the food. The only way she gets the food is to stay in the channel.
OR have you tried a treat toy? There are small stuffed toys that have velcro in them. You put treats inside them, and then the dog chases the toy for the treats. You can also try a Manners Minder. This works well when training running contacts. I don't know how your trainer will feel about those suggestion. I make sure never to force a dog to one specific reward. Not all dogs are toy motivated. Not all dogs are treat motivated. Some dogs are neither treat nor toy motivated, but are motivated by something else. I train to the dog - not to what I like to use (ie. treats or toys).

Thanks Agility9trainer. I made myself a treat bag out of those fuzzy things you put over the heads of your golf clubs. It should work like a treat toy as she is very motivated by food.
I tried it out this morning and she took to it right away as soon as she realized there was food in it. The only thing I have to remember is not to say "good girl" as she then looks at me for the treat. If I don't say that, she is focused on getting the treat out of the bag and does not even look at me which is a big improvement already. I will work on for a few minutes several times a day for this week and by next Saturday she should be doing it well. She is a very smart little dog and picks things up really fast. |

Had to cancel our Agility classes today as it was -26 degrees this morning (-10F). It did not warm up much during the day and is back down to -15 at 5 pm so will probably be just as cold tonight. The missed class will be added on to the end of the classes so will go to Feb. 9th now.

Had our second class today as it was just around zero and nice and sunny. I used the treat bag I made with Lucy and she ran the channel weaves really well. Even got a little wiggle out of her when they were closer together and she did not duck out once.
We did a jump, A-frame and tunnel sequence and she was good. Could not quite maintain her 2o2o as she came down the A-frame too fast. She would correct herself but this is apparently not a good habit as she would not Q if she did it in a trial. I know we are a long way from trialing but not a good habit for her to get into. When it is not as steep, she holds the 2o2o with no problem, like on the teeter and dog walk. Will have to practice at home using a steeper board till she is used to it. Does really well on the table, jumps up and goes into a down and will stay while I have someone count and while I walk around. Remmy's class went well too. Now that I am starting to give him clearer signals, he is starting to do better and not wanting to set his own courses which he was starting to do at times. |

Wow, what a nice update. I hope you can get some videos. I'd love to see them both in action.

Had a really good class today. We set up a full course with jumps, dog walk, table, tunnel, teeter, tire, so all obstacles but the A-frame and weaves. We did 6 obstacles, then the other 6, then combined all 12. Lucy ran them perfectly, doing her 2o2o on both the dog walk and teeter and since I kept running to the next obstacle she did her "touch" and went on to the next obstacle when I told her to. The last run she even sent out to the tunnel so I did not have to run as far but she sure kept me going. I am really going to have to work at keeping up with her.
Remmy is doing good too and is starting to pay more attention to where I am sending him now that I am giving him the right signals. We are all having a lot of fun. |

Had our fourth class yesterday. We set up a course and practiced on it a few times. The first time Lucy missed the chute as she has not done it since last years class but took her back and she went through it fine the next two times.
Had the weave chute closed up a lot more and she ran through it really fast with a good "wiggle" starting. I can never throw in a straight line so what I do is walk her down, show her the treat bag and put it down, then walk back to the other end. Have to almost drag her back she is so eager to go. When I take her collar off, she just races through the channel. She can't get the treat till I open the bag so if she ducked out she would not get a treat but so far even though I ran her half a dozen times, she has never attempted to duck out which she was doing when I did not throw it straight. Our instructor brought along her "Manners Minder". Not too impressed with it. She used it on the weaves and the A-frame with her dog but the small treats seemed to get stuck at times so it was slow delivering the treat. It also is quite noisy and her dog would just lay down and stare at it waiting for another treat. I think the theory is good but don't think I would be spending $100.00 plus shipping to get one. |
