Thumbs up In Celebration of a First Excellent!

Been putting this video together for a while now, in celebration of Ash earning his first Excellent title in agility, his AXP earned yesterday, this is all 9 Qualifying runs that encompassed the journey. In this format it is easy to observe how we grew as a team, each level how our speed and accuracy increased as we developed a more cohesive language. I am honored to have such a wonderfully forgiving foundation dog to be my companion through figuring this sport out. Ash, this video is all about you! Even before your title, you were always Excellent in my heart.

Listen to the song, I feel it is reflective of the inner spirit of running agility... it isn't about the finish line, it means more than just ribbons, there has to be more to being out there than just fancy letters at the end of the name... It's about seeing the development, running in perfect sync with your dog, feeling that strange symbiotic nature when you're in that rare groove. The high at the finish line lasts but a moment before the next dog begins... the bond with your companion lasts a lifetime.

Ashenpaw, Road to Agility Excellence

Love it Draco, and huge congratulations on your accomplishments with both Ash and Ion! Way back in 2009 you wrote this response to something I had written about competing with our dogs.

"This was brought to my attention and boy does it deserve a bump! For those dreaming of getting into competition, even for the fun and bonding, it doesn't take long for that imperceptible change! Ash and I are still in our Rally class and the gears are starting to line up. If you've ever thought about training for competition: go for at a class and give it a whirl in whatever your preference is! It's so much fun."

At that time did you even dream you and Ash would become as deeply involved as you have and go this far in the sport? I'll have to admit I'm just a tad bit envious of all of you who have the additional benefits of videos to add to your wonderful collection of memories.

Have You Thought of Competing With Your Dog?

We started in Rally way back when... way back when he had simply been a house dog, content to be a couch potato. In that first class I had never imagined we would have been this far so soon. He was eager, and easy to teach with the bond already in place, but still--agility? Obedience in the fast lane? No way! And yet, after eleven months of classes at the persistent urging of my instructor to take the leap of faith we stepped out for the that first time (the first run in the video is from that weekend! His last run of the trial). Ash was awesome! Stepping right up the line and ready to roll. At that point I didn't even know what each of the titles were, so I had no idea where we could go! I just went out there knowing I needed to teach him the ropes of running in those rings. And here I am, as Ash earned his first Excellent level title and got a first leg towards his Jumpers title at the other end of the line I am teaching Ion the ropes of the competition ring where in the same trial Ash titled he earned 3 out of 4 Q's!

If you had asked me back then when I made that post where I would be roughly 4 years down the road, I would not have even considered it would be with three performance dogs: Parker with his RE, Ashenpaw halfway to his RAE with an Excellent Pref standard agility title and a leg towards his Jumpers Pref agility title, and Ion with 1 leg left to earn his RA two legs earned in his Novice Jumpers and 1 leg in his Novice Standard. Nope, never would have even fathomed it... and yet with persistence we are here having worked through the stumbling blocks and walls that cause many to give up. Building a performance team is not easy, and requires a lot of work--the trick is to make most of it into play.

Any pointers on how to get 'full' screen mode so I can watch the video again as it was a small pic? Thanks

Hit the full screen button at the lower right hand corner, the options pop up when you hover the cursor over the video.

Thanks!! As it was that good to watch Great team work! It's a pity there isn't a local Agilty course near to me as I am sure Nipper would love it!
