Default Agility Ability, a wonderful idea

This is one of the most terrific ideas I have seen:

"A central Ohio facility for dog agility training is more for children than animals, 10TVís Jerry Revish reported on Wednesday...At Agility Ability, the focus is on children with special needs, though."

Wow! Thanks for posting this Janice. A program like this could mean small miracles for so many of these kids.

I just forwarded this to a long time friend who is a retired teacher, dog trainer and canine behaviorist. She has also recently celebrated 30 years of active involvement with a local dog training club. If anyone has the contacts to start the ball rolling on a program like this in my area, it would be her. Can't wait to see if she shows any interest.

I know! I saw all sorts of wonderful potential in this program! and just off the top of my head I can think of many kids that I have known who could gain so much from it. (and personally, I think you and your friend together could do some amazing things setting one up !)

I'd sure need to dust off my organizational skills. But this would be something I could really get into given half the opportunity. Through his school, James, (my great grandson) attends a group called Horses Help twice a month and they're learning about horses. So I do know that there is at least one animal related therapy program available through the Autism Society here. Hmmm now that I think about it maybe I should forward the url to this article directly to the Autism Society too.

I would think that a program like this would be most appealing to those who want to do agility "just for the fun of working with their dog" rather than for the more serious competitors. Even though I've never tried Agility I can picture in my mind the type of dog that would be best for this.

They would have to love or at least easily tolerate kids; be patient, confident, enthusiastic but not hyper, forgiving in nature, and somewhat full of themseves along with a marked sense of humor.

The owners as mentors would need to meet the same qualifications as their dogs.

I completely agree with you Carol, and imo, this is one of the most wonderful aspects of dog sports---what programs like this can offer to special needs kids. I'm hoping to hear that your friend responds, recruits you, and to read of great things to come
