Default Dyno's Agility!

Our Trainer put out a jumpers with weaves course she had at a trial a couples weeks ago. It was a wonderful experience. And, fortunately, I have a video to show you all!

We're still working very hard on on his weaves, his Daddy is making his own set this week. He was originally learning them where they separate, but we've changed facilities and they just lure through them So we'll see

Also... His first Trial is Oct 2nd! YAY! So we'll see how everything goes. I'm going to jump him at a preferred height, just because he's so long and not as young as he used to be, it'll make things easier for him.

Oh! And a tidbit I forgot to mention?

This video was taken at the end of his 9th class. And we still don't have our own equipment to practice on.

Nice job! Thanks for posting the vid. I think Dyno did really well with the weaves, considering it's only the 4th time.

9 out of 10 times he does poorly... He's so long he goes VERY wide. But he's getting better, and My handling is getting better. I need to hang back a little more (like I did that run) to help him not go so wide. Thanks for your Comment Dee I'm so excited and he's doing SO well. I'll upload a video inside with some contacts

What 'breed' or mix is Dyno? He sort of has the same body of Lucy except for the tail. Hers is longer and not curly at all. Guess I will have to get a picture of it.

Congrats!! Nice front crosses.

You're planning to trial in October?!?! Wow. My students aren't allowed to trial till their dogs can cleanly complete an Excellent course AND have independent obstacles (including 12 weaves). What happens is it stresses the dog to do badly because the handlers go into the shows very nervous. This makes the ring a stressy, "bad" place. So the dogs begin to disike showing. I've seen literally hundreds of dogs drop out of agility because they were trialed early.

Also, using the lure method for training poles will only train slow poles. Have you discussed with your trainer about channels, Weave-a-Matics, or 2X2s? These methods train much faster poles. I'll be honest. The lure method for weave pole training hasn't been used for about a decade. It's very old school. However, she may be teaching you proper poles and told you to put him through however you could this one time.

Choosing the right agility trainer when you are looking to compete is so important as the foundations need to hold up on your dog for the career of the dog. I don't show my personal dogs until they have been training agility for one to two YEARS. I mean, you have to teach proper umping ala Salo or Mecklenburg, you have to teach extension vs. collection, you have to teach proper contacts (ie. 20/20, 1RTO, true running, PVC box, etc.), you have to teach the flat work (which my students do for about six months), you have to teach a proper rear cross/front cross with a verbal cue, the four directionals, the turning cues, obstacle/handler focus and the list goes on and on.

If you don't know what the above is, then you might want to consider a new trainer, IF you are looking to compete.

Some trainers get students on the equipment quickly as students will stop coming with the difficult foundation work required off the equipment. This foundation work is DULL but it makes all the difference between the top dogs and the rest.

I'm not saying your trainer is "bad" She may be giving you all the stuff I mentioned and more. But IMO the lure weaves isn't a good thing at all and trialing this early is very dangerous for your team. An Loouie is still lacking obstacle focus.

She is teaching you the beginnings of a good cross and some basic handling moves, BTW, so I am seeing some good things in there too.

I know what Agility9trainer is talking about. Remmy did not have the basic training that he should have had if we had had a trainer available. It is starting to catch up to him now that he is in Masters classes and I don't know if it is too late to "start over".

I started out just doing it for fun, then got interested in trialing and Remmy did really well all things considered but wish I could backtrack a couple of years.
