Default New Agility Titles!!!

After a four day weekend of agility, Aslan is going to be put into the Preferred level of agility. He's accomplished everything I wanted him to at his Regular ump height, and now due to age will be put into a type of "Veterans" class.

There's a lot of story behind this. At Nationals over a year ago, I noticed that Aslan couldn't hear me over the crowd noise. Because of this, we didn't "qualify" or pass on some of our runs. He was obviously distressed over this. I had the vet check his ears, and he saw a small piece of old wax on his ear drum. I used ear wash. He seemed slightly better, but our distance work was bad. If he was too far from me working away from me, he couldn't hear.

Well, Aslan is known for his distance. Because I have health issues and cannot run well AT ALL, Aslan has been taught to work easily 30 to 40 or more feet away from me. He's excelled at it all of his career. Yet he can also do tight work. This is a very difficult thing to train both and do both well, but little Aslan has always been a cut above, IMO.

Because Aslan is so well known for his distance skills, I desperately wanted him to earn the TQX (Triple Q Excellent) title. This title means that he qualified in Standard agility class, Umpers With Weaves agility class AND the FAST Class all on the same day 10 times. In other words, he was perfect all day long. The FAST Class is a distance class whereby the handler must work the dog in a difficult sequence from a large distance away. A dog with this title is an ALL AROUND agility dog being able to work both distance AND tight work. But my wonderful little 12" distance dog wasn't working distance anymore. The dog KNOWN for what this very title represents was not hearing me anymore.

He did revisit the vet, but to no avail. We worked together for over a year till I finally went to the vet and told him to put Aslan under and give that ear a good look. When the vet did, he said he began pulling out wax and pulling out wax with dog hair and more wax. The little "blob" on the ear was much larger in reality than it looked with the ear magnifier instrument. (I've heard this happens).

Suddenly Aslan could hear again, and the Triple Qs started flowing in once again.

This weekend, Aslan earned his TQX with a FIRST in FAST!!! (He also earned a First and Second in Umpers and Standard, although I can't remember which class got which placement.) He has earned the highest distance title currently offered by the AKC.

In addition, Aslan earned his Fourth MACH (Master's Agility CHampionship). His new titles should be represented below. This weekend we took his victory lap for his Championship and TQX at the agility trial to the cheers of our friends.

It will be his last victory lap at the Regular Ump height. With those titles, Aslan has achieved all and more than I ever began to dream. When he was three, I had hoped that maybe one day, if everything went REALLY well, we might be able to get a MACH. MAYBE. He's gotten four of them and earned every high level agility title offered by the AKC. He is my hero to do as well as he does with the huge physical limitations of his handler. My limitations mean he has to be trained to a much higher standard than other agility dogs.

The Preferred Class he will be moving to is a veteran's type class. It will allow him to ump four inches lower - going from 12" to 8". This will be such an advantage to him physically as he ages. He will be 10 in two months. While I could easily get a fifth and sixth MACH on him, I believe it's best to allow him to age without the rigors of the sport causing him to age faster. And this is in no way retirement. I have serious dreams for him. The Preferred Class has it's own Championship title (the PACH) and I would love to get one or two of those. And I'm hoping to qualify and attend Nationals with him for at least two to four years in the Preferred Class. And getting that TQX in the Preferred Class would be icing on the cake.

So while Aslan is making a change, he is not "fading away." He'll still be tearing it up at agility trials with his puppy looks and his spunky spirit!!! Be watching our signature line for titles beginning with the letter P. These will be his new Preferred titles!!!

I'm hoping to have a video out from his recent runs in a couple of weeks.

Congratulations! Looks like this was a great weekend for MANY competing in dog sports. Ash is running in Preferred class already, I love my boy, but we started rather late and I want to protect his health. Ion, my little bright boy, is a WHOLE nother circumstance! He'll be out there at full height when he's ready.

Your story of the ear wax shows how something sooo commonplace can have a tremendous impact on performance!

Congratulations on a great dog! It is amazing what the two of you have accomplished and that he is still going strong at his age. He is certainly a once in a lifetime dog.
